Postby malla » Thu Dec 27, 2007 2:11 pm

hey team,

i am transplanting the eng and drive train from 1 gt4 to another.

this will be my first attempt at mechanical work on a toyota,so was

wondering if there is anything in particular that i may need to know before i proceed?

or if anyone could direct me to a previous poll of the same nature,

would be greatly appreciated.

cheers, malla.....

yep!

but a swap from one to another shouldnt be too bad.
got a hoist? drop the whole lot out the bottom.
it will prob take you 3-4 days to do.....

A few little hints that i can think of...

-If you take the turbo off before you drop the motor (might make it easier), make sure you dont damage the oil feed! (take it right off)
-Make sure you move the clutch line right out of the way
-Get at least the midpipe off before dropping (i found it easier to remove turbo/dp and midpipe, altho i was swapping engine and keeping turbo)

I removed turbo and exhaust, pulled the outer cv's out of the hub, and removed the engine, gearbox and driveshafts in one go.

Removing 3SGTEs is definately something you learn by doing it. First time took me 2 days to drop, 2nd time 3 hours.

hmmm,.....im nervous now.......

i gota team of 4 so 2 guys per car,and was hoping to have both eng/gbox out, and 1 eng/box back in by the end of the day.

(but by no means are my buddies any more mechanically minded than i am).

so drop eng/box out the bottom? ive got an engine lift and was hoping the eng/box will come out as 1 piece through the top?

thanks for the info, i get underway on saturday,

anything else, be good of you to let me know.

wont come out the top in one piece
when you do a clutch on these its about an 8 hour job and you drop the lot out together....

dont get me wrong, its not a techniquly difficult job, just takes a long time!

there is no way the engine and gearbox will go up, the transfer case just wont allow it.. Dont bother..

Plus its far easyer to drop it onto the ground then lift the car up over it than it is expexted.

Just make sure before you drop it EVERYTHINGS off, plugs, leads, earth cables last thing you want it somthing lame and small to snap.

Its not to hard to put in, i put mine in alone was a pain in the butt trying to line it up, lower the hoist, move the hoist. raise the hoist etc but its certainly not overly hard work providing you come up from the bottom get it into the cam side engine mount first then work your way to what ever flows best from there.

You changing the clutch while your at it? I hope so.. also not a bad time to check other small things if you plant o keep the car.

Oil seals, clutch, fluids and bearings.. All far easyer to do with it on the floor than in the car.. Trust me.

Don't lift up the front of the car and try to drop the engine/gearbox out as it tends to catch on everything. If you leave the car level it will drop straight down.

Oh, and get a 12mm (?) gearwrench for the PS pump bolt unless you want to unwind it 25mm 1/12 a turn at a time!

cheers team,

i brought the donator off a guy who had the car fully reconditioned,

everything done, including the clutch.unfortunately for him,he ran it into the back of someone adn got fed up with it and sold it to me.(cheap too.)

i drove it back from out west aucks and went through the quarry in mt welington(new sub div...heap a road... no cars)this thing drifting on tarmac.
1st,2nd,3rd im getting wheel spin from what it feels to be all four.

so the drive chain is all coming out and going on mine.

tommorow is all prep work, tools......shade.....lunch.....beers.....and de brief with the boys.

i appreciate everyones input and will get the misus to load pics of progress as we go.

if i get stuck, ill chuck a questions on this post and wait hopefully wait for someone to throw me a lifeline.

cheers team,

definitily gets quicker with practise, its relatively easy if you have either a forklift or a car hoist, without either, i'd imagine it'd be a right c-unt of a job

Its not too bad... I did it with 2 scissor jacks and some bricks

Definately easier with an engine lifter!!

good morning,

the project actually started yesterday an we pretty much got it knocked out.
th engine lift is a life saver(plus my 3 mates)without it, i just dont see how you possilbly do this job.the eng and box are heavy!!!

so yesterday we managed to drop both eng/box and put 1 back in,now the put it back together stage.

this is where i will need your help,im putting back together the the wiring loom side,so far so good but there is only 1 breather hose that i cant find a home for.

I will take some pics today and post them so you can point anything out.

oh yea, so i got a 3s-gte eng for sale and the body too.

hey everyone,

everything went real smooth, the engine is running real strong, no oil leaks and no funny noises.realy satisfied with what we have done.

however,

the clutch is way too on the light side, almost to the point where i can not get it into gear.
i have bleed it, and i have checked the master/slave and lines and there seems to be no visible leaks.

i wound the peddle out all the way and it just seems to be missing a half inch worth of pressure.

any ideas of what it could be?

i will photobucket progress pics tonight.

cheers for you help!!!!!1

I don't think he split the box. If it's light, to me thats pointing towards air in the line, I would re-bleed it.

In that case then yeah, id try rebleeding it. can be tricky to get right if you havent perfected your technique.

If you did split engine and box, id be thinking about the bearing.
