Toyota bolt torque specifications...

Postby jondee86 » Thu Jan 03, 2008 8:03 pm

The Toyota Repair Manual gives recommended tightening torques
for just about every bolt on a 4AGE engine. But nowhere do I see
any mention if these are dry thread or lubricated thread values.

Since a lubricated thread will give the same clamping force with
about 40% less torque, it would be nice to know for sure if I should
be using oil on the threads.

Does anyone know FOR SURE if the Manual values are dry or
lubricated ?? Mr Revhead perhaps ??

Lube.

Nothing should be dry thread torque as with a dry thread you can never be sure of the friction working against you.

To lube or not to lube ??

Yeah, I hear what you are saying about lubing the threads (and
under the heads) to make sure that all the applied torque is not
lost in overcoming friction.

Some publications tell you that the listed tightening torques are
for lubed threads. Others don't, and in such cases it is not always
safe to use the values with lubed threads. This can lead to over-
torquing, stretching and subsequent failure of fasteners.

This is why I want to know if it is safe to use the torque figures
given in the Toyota Manual with lubed threads ?? I would be kind
of pissed if I was to start stripping threads or snapping off bolts

I've used oil on the threads and on the washer of the heads studs of the 20V's I have assembled.
