Getting new car.. what to get??

Postby RabidGinFairy » Tue Jan 15, 2008 8:01 pm

Hey all I'm looking to buy a practical, reliable, economical (ie boring! :) )car and have been looking at Celicas (the early 90s model with pop up lights). I've found a 2.2 litre (engine code 5S-FE) which I assume is pretty rare. Just wondered if anyone owns one of these or what Celicas are like to own in general?? Would be looking at a GTR. Any other suggestions?!
I already have a Supra ;)
Thanks heaps!

yeah, trouble is I'm used to a wagon (company vehicle is mondeo, 2.0l and gutless as hell). I love the look of a Legnum, but have heard these cars are trouble?? My friend owned a celica and said the boot was quite spacious, I like bein able to throw my bike in the back or even a little mattress thing from time to time! Probably looking for a 2dr liftback thing like the celica or integra (but will consider anything), up to $4000. After something thats economical, but has a little power to make it up the kaimais or actually overtake safely!
Probably analysing this a bit too much lol but hey I gotta drive it everyday! Cheers :)

Carib? They're pretty spacious, with a blacktop for that power you're after.

You won't get a BZ carib for >$4k though.

I reckon a GT-R celica would be a good choice. I've not been is a 5sfe celica, but apparently the 3sge engine is much better to drive.

yeah seems the 5sfe is not as good as the 3sge. Was meant for America or something so could be clogged with emission restrictions. Think I could go with a Celica, seem like pretty good cars, haven't heard anything bad about them..

Just picked up a manual 1989 ST-183 Celica GT-R before christmas. Can't complain really. Not much room for sleeping in, but I eventually found that the drivers seat is plenty comfy enough.

Drop the seats and you'll easy fit a bike in the boot. The 3S-GE is pretty damn good on gas ~15KM/L and that wasn't nanaing it either. Plenty more power than a mondeo station wagon I would say. And they handle pretty damn sweet too.

Could even go for a GT-4 of the same model for under $4K now.

DC2 Integra, currently the performance bargain I reckon. Can pick up a tidy facelift SiR for 5 grand or less, or a round headlight model for stuff all. 180hp and a light chassis.

Way more capable than a Celica, at slightly more cost.

Another vote for the Carib wagon. And don't touch a Legnum with a 10 foot pole, unless its to push it off a cliff.

The 2.2 engines are great. They dont rev, but have good power.
Have you driven it?
