convince me to buy a supra ova an rx7

just like the title say. i'm about to buy a 1997 S7 RS rx7 Batman.. but as it has got to the point of me handing over the $ i am having second thoughts.. i love em and always wanted a replacement after losing my S1 rx7. at this point i know a supra will be WAY more reliable and has more potential for more HP. but i'm not concerned about speed much as long as it pulls it weight fine and looks really good i'm happy. i know rotarys are ticking time bombs and they the engine can pop any time(if this happened i'd have no prob getting a rebuild and get a port while at it). this is just a weekend car and nothing else.i am not looking at putting it on the track of playing with the engine at all. i don't know a lot about supras and some comparision will be good. with the new import laws i would expect an rx7 to keep its value alot longer than a supra as well. i do not have any big financial commitments so $ is no object at this stage. at the moment i'm going with the 7, try and convince me other ways towards the toyota

Go RX7 :lol:

If the engine DOES go pop.get it rebuilt by someone trustworthy and it wont go pop...

My engines going fine after alot of rev limit hits.. And dads after 2 seasons of racing is still going. Built by a local guy in Hamilton.

We're not running high HP tho, but still a decent engine builder will build it for boost.

Go the RX7 :D

I like the styling of the RX7 more than the Supra. Plus theres some mean body kits out there for them.

I love both cars but in my eyes, if money is no problem then Supra < RX7

go the rx7,
the first thing that it needs is a microtech and a decent tune to make it reliable, or leave it completly standard,
if its modified with out changing the computer its a time bomb, even small things like exhaust, intake and intercooler the factory computer cannot compensate for.

if you have the money to do so get it rebuilt do so first, get 3mm seals,
if its in good condition it wont cost any were near as much as if it pops,

100k seems to be the best rebuild point, for cost effectivness.

i dont see a rebuild any time soon, as compression on front and rear housings are 110 on each (well was more like 107/110/109 110/109,110 on all faces). i were told buy one person (rx7 owner trying to sell his to me) that a twin turbo rx7 is suposed to have around 98psi.. i dont believe this as other sources say a rebuilt 13b from the S6/7 will have anything from 110-125+ psi. depending of parts used but will not be below 110.

its easier to find a nice unmolested example of a supra that you know will be reliable.
if the rx7 is a particularly tidy example i'd go for that, but it seems quite difficult to find one that hasnt been raped to within an inch of its life now.

the supras have crazy torque, are wicked long distance tourers, and are quite a comfortable place to be. they tend not to spit out driveline components or have engine faults. they are way less stressed than the rotary engine and make you a lazy driver.
they can actually hold their own quite happily through a twisty road too if you how to drive.

oh and i dont know many people that have owned rx7's longterm , they seem to be owned briefly, enjoyed, broken, fed up with, fixed and sold onwards :lol:

I intend to keep my RX7 for awhile.. My S1 never gave me trouble (bar gearbox) and so far only gearbox for my S6.. no engine

but I do see where your coming from.
And it doesnt have to be highly modified or in bad shape to be thrashed.. mine came in stock standard bar enkei 18" wheels and a greddy boost gauge. stock exhaust, intake, computer, etc...
engine and turbos were $&#$%... only 70kms. so japan owner obviously hooned it standard.

i would go supra, unless you were going to go 1uz, 2jz or sr20det into the rx7.

how many supras do you see advertised as engine rebuilt 2000kms ago?

If i had just rebuilt an engine i would drive it alot longer than short term.. unless it was just going to blow again :roll:

Get the seven! I've got one and its a blast!
I will say though, that make sure you have at least $3k aside for when things go wrong, because they will.
Same could be said for any car of this pedigree though.

Again it s personal opinion your going to get here.For reliabilities sakes and you say you don't want to spend alot of $$$ Toyota handsdown.I have never owned a RX-7 so can't really comment.But I no there will be good examples out there my friend used to own a Spirit R and that really was a real piece of equipment.

I have owned 3 mkiv TT Supra's in the last 8 years Manual and Auto and they are both very good reliable fast and they do handle very well.They are a over engineered car trust me i have done many events drag track-days and have really tried to break these cars but have yet to do anything major.The big advantage I believe in your case is the motors the 2JZ is thee stoutest JDM motor out there you can actually rape it and it just asks for more.

I just have done basic upgrades to mine and netted 450 HP@ flywheel with mine at 1.2 bar boost and the 2JZ handles this power with ease and again broken record time reliabily.

But either way both cars are good.

rotary's just dont take detonation full stop that is what kills the apex seals. with the tuning kept in check they'll make crazy HP with the right porting and turbo. I'm a rotary fan from way back but as far as relaible big power goes if you want to abuse it, a JZ wins hands down
