Rebuilding SC12

Postby AE82 FXGT » Sat Jan 19, 2008 10:28 pm

Hey all,

I'm thinking of getting a supercharger rebuilt, I have no experience in this area but would be able to take it off and send it somewhere to get rebuilt, I did a search and the only relevant thread was this:

http://forums.toyspeed.org.nz/viewtopic.php?t=34620&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=sc12+rebuilt&start=20

Is this Fandango guy still around?
Does anyone else know of any places that could rebuild an sc12?

I'm running a 14psi evil_si pulley kit, and even in higher gears I'm not getting 14 pound. :(
Plus the bearing on the pulley is getting noisey, (rattling when off boost)
I read the earlier sc12 just use an aircon electromagnetic clutch, but later ones don't, anyone know some sort of solution?

Thanks in advance

Have you done the ABV mod? If you haven't, it'll stop you from getting 14psi of boost.

All SC12s haven clutched pulleys (from factory). The later ones have a different type of pulley though. Slightly smaller too from memory.

I took my SC12 to a place in Auckland that rebuild them. They can only do so much to them though, the impellors need to be in good condition and I think all they do is the bearings. Can't think of where it was though, sorry dude. Will try dig up the info.

Yeah done the ABV mod.

I knew that the later ones had smaller pulleys on them, in that thread they say it's hard to get them, but the earlier ones are just AC pulleys.

Just scored another sc12 today, $100 and the impellors look good, ie no scratches, pitting or anything, it's done about 150kms, but it looks like there is oil on them :? , I take it that means the seals are leaking or something?

It's also from an aw11 sc so it has the bigger clutch on it, but I can't just swap my one on as thats already noisy which is why I wanted a rebuild in the first place :(

Any ideas anyone?

There's nothing wrong with the pulley on the AW11 ones. My AW11 had a Cusco pulley and it boosted right up to 14-15 psi no worries.
My s/c had an oil residue on the impellors too, but didn't cause any problems.

some superchargers just dont produce the high boost with big pulley, mine used to go 12 all the time, adn on cold nights 13 psi. that was with the "14psi" pulley

So if I use just a new regular AC clutch on the older SC and put it on my ae101 it will still boost good even though it is a little bit more under driven than before?

I just want to boost good get rid of that annoying rattle the bearing has when off boost with a new clutch.

The pulley kit made a huge difference to the car, boost is higher and comes on harder but it only goes up to 11~12psi.

I just don't want to lose boost by putting on a bigger pulley/clutch on the SC...

I ended up getting rid of my ABV in the end. It got dented on the top of it and caused a boost leak.
Bredon's right, some just don't boost that high. If you're getting 12psi, why bother? My S/C was noisy when turned off too. I cleaned the pulley and clutch assembly with contact cleaner, to get any grit and cr@p out of it.

What sort of intercooler are you using? Stock or a front mount?
Front intercoolers can have a boost drop, but will perform better than the stock interheater anyway.
If you've got a stock interheater, get rid of it and get something else. If you don't want a front mount, I'd say go for a Subaru water to air jobbie. They're cheap as and will keep your inlet piping short.

Yeah still got the factory top mount, I am still on the look out for a a2a top mount upgrade, seen them around on TM but on cars already and no one wants to part with them.

I don't want a front mount as that throttle delay after closing the throttle will just get bigger with piping + bigger cooler etc.

I don't know if I want the hassle of w2a as there is more to go wrong, and wouldn't know where to mount the waterpump, radiator and all associated bits let alone find them all in good nick.

I may try to clean the top mount out a bit as it has got some oil in it from the breather, and an oil film would reduce the effectiveness of the cooler, should get a catch can too I guess...

I might try cleaning the pulley out to stop the crackling.

i have heard they actually run better at 12psi than 14psi anyway, from someone who ran both setups.

How does that work?
Is it like a heat factor or something?
