If you wanted a "race" event, Labour Weekend, Wellington is the Port Road Street Sprint.

You could get a "day licence" for $20, and if there's interest enough, I can see if my car club will do an event membership for whatever it will cost the club which I'm sure will be under $5.

Port Road entry itself is $70.

The disadvantage is that people with monkeybuilt roll cages (Jappa bolt in nasty) or monkeybuilt cars (battery's badly mounted in the car, subs velcro'd to the boot carpet, battery's held in with rope, stuff like that) won't be able to play. People would need extinguisher, helmet, overalls (100% cotton ok). NB: roll protection isn't mandatory, unless you're running a convertable.

The advantage, is that you don't have to organise *anything*, because the organising car club runs everything, you just turn up on Saturday afternoon to scrutineering, then to race on Sunday.

yes they are good fun, also a good excuse to group a local with some out of towners so there is more mingling involved

At the Chch megameet they had one and by all accounts it was enjoyed by those who did it.
There was even a guy threatening to throw everyone off the end of the brighton pier if they tried to help his GF that he was verbally abusing

Leon, bloody good idea. always wanted to venture north with car, and would be super cheap to trailer Levin to Picton, then drive onto ferry the D plate to venue!!

That doesn't mean he wouldn't turn up to one if there was another one up here. You're making it sound like megameet is an exclusive club for people who've turned up in the past, which it isn't.

Why did '06 not go to Welly as was originally intended? I think we need to remember lessons learned.

For me, back at uni after working for a few years, it's not the money but the fact that Labour wkend is in the middle of end year exams. I'd imagine this affects most students.

Taupo is a good idea, but labour weekend is basically guaranteed to be booked out for accommodation, tourist attractions and racetrack :(
The MR2OC megarun is in taupo this year, this is what they are doing. http://www.mr2megarun.co.nz/events.htm some interesting ideas there.

Is that slipway place in welly big enough for a motorkhana/autocross?

That looks like a reasonably fun event. I'm actually going to that trackday, my car will be a little out of place I think :P

However early planning was for it to be held in Welly but it didn't go ahead. Was wondering if anyone remembered why. Must've been a good reason?

Man I'm going to cut to the chase wheather it be Taupo or Palmy I don't mind when do you want my $$$ for the track-day I'll pay now save you the drama's of chasing me up.Remember last year there are some lesson's to be learn't,non-refundable deposit have a cut-off date for the money to be collected.Have a certain number of cars e.g 40 and a reserved list of about 5 or so.But in most case's once people have forked over the $$$ they'll turn up as last year I believe it was a bit touch and go right upto the day of the event.

I think the key though for you guy's on the organising committee is to get all the $$$ together so you cover all your costs. From experience people will indicate alot of interest early and come hell or high water something will happen. So the important thing here is COLLECT the MONEY ASAP.

just remember a track day is not a guaranteed part of a MM.

the biggest MMs so far didnt have a track day, and theres a limited number of centres where a track day is viable. so dont count on there being one.
im not saying there wont be, but i think its wrong to expect one

Very true.. Too many people deciding they would go, then not, then go, then not. Brad had a crap job dealing with that so it should be pay up and thats it. I payed but due to unfortunate circumstances couldn't run - no refund and im not sour about it - it was just my bad luck (and having a "reliable rotary"  )

does that mean that taupo full track is already booked for labour weekend? (pretty much every day of '08 even)

so that can easily be translated to:' MM08 does not NEED to be in a centre with a racetrack.

wellington has merits in the fact that Port Rd could be used, as well as the regular autocross track, or Slipway, and is central for most of the populace.

I understand but it would be a shame not to as I believe last year it proved to be a great success and Brad and his team did a good job everyone who wanted to got heaps of track time and the day itself went really well I thought.Alot of people have good handling and very powerful cars and I just don't think a cruise show's these cars abilities whereas thats the whole idea behind having a track-day letting our cars loose in a controlled atmosphere like Manfeild instead of parking them on the side of the road and taking photo's.I no for some a track-day is not there cup of tea but for a serious car enthusiast who like to no what you as a driver and the true ability of there car track-days are the way to go.
