Overheating problem, multiple things replaced, still happens

Hi,

AE100 Toyota Corolla 2E Manual

Car was overheating horribly for a while there, blown head gasket and radiator had had it as well.

So far we've replaced the head gasket, radiator, thermostat and water pump and it's still over heating.

People have suggested fracture to the head? We had a good look at it and cleaned it up and couldn't see anything wrong(but even then, apparently it could be a hairline fracture, something the eye may not pick up)

Another person has suggested bypassing the heater?? and just connecting the pipes straight up.

Any other thought as to what the problem could be?

Does it always overheat doing the same thing? (ie driving along at 50, or stopping at the lights etc)

Is the radiator fan working?

Is the radiator cap in good condition?

if it overheated for a while then chances are looking good that you have warped the head. heat does bad things

It overheats after roughly 15-20mins of driving. Basically, it warms up and then keeps going.

Fan works.

Have new radiator cap.

I'm thinking it's a warped head at this stage :/

Did you flush the radiator before installing it? I had the same kinda issue in my C33, replaced the thermostat and fan, still overheated, replaced the radiator (which I had thought was fine!) and problem gone.

May not be your problem, but mine had same symptoms, fine for 20mins then creeping up a little.

I'd be swapping the engine out for a wrecker engine by now, if its been real hot a few times you should start fresh. Also make sure that rad gets flushed real good too, make sure water's flowing thru it well incase its blocked up somewhere

keep all the new bits you just got for the replacement engine.

I'm guessing its cheaper to get another 2E than it would be to get the head taken off and tested, so could be the way to go.

Where would be the best places to go??

You can get 4EF (not FE, F as in carb, no need to muck around with wiring) straight bolt on, but 100 times better...

maybe it's time to look at something a little bigger/better than the 2E

No head skim or pressure/crack test done? Should always check the head for flatness and usually skim it if its got hot

Sorry for the hi-jack, but my 5efe has been doing the same thing. Drive for about 20 mins and the temp goes up.

The water level does go down aswell. Ive checked for leaks, none were found. Also the overflow bottle is always full, even if the radiator has emptied itself. I havnt let the temp get into the red yet, so hoping no damage has been done, but it gets real annoying having to fill up after every trip.


Any suggestions?

if its losing water and theres no leaks, you can be pretty sure its the head / headgasket (ie its burning the coolant)

how sure are you theres no leaks? no chance its leaking onto the exhaust and evaporating before it gets a chance to make a puddle in your driveway?

Get a TK test done, has that BHG sound about it.

Ive let it idle on the driveway for about 10mins, fan going on and off, all the time lying on the round looking round the underside of the engine and where all the water pipes go.

I havnt done a compression test yet, but theres no murky residue under the cap.

A head gasket blowing does not mean there will be oil in the water, water in the oil, a lot of water etc. It depends on how it blows as to what issue you end up with.

If the gasket blows between a cylinder and the cooling system then you get water loss or radiator pressurizing etc etc. If it goes between oil and water gallery or the head gets warped from something else then they can mix.

A compression test may or may not tell you anything. A leakdown test will tell you the degree or cylinder leakage and where its going. Probably one of the better ways to check whats going on if you can be bothered doing it
