An 802.11 transmitter is usually stationary. A police car, somewhat less so.

indeed you are right, thats why I said "with enough signals"...
this is getting a bit far off topic, I'll move along and back to my geek forums :)

This is already illegal... however, I have been pulled over for it, ticket, and took it to court and successfully argued that I was simply warning the on coming motorists of an emergency vehicle in the vicinity.

It's not illegal as far as I know. What offence were you charged with?

umm, I'll have to look it up, but finding the info may be a bit hard, 2 houses ago you see.

It was something like "obstructing something with intent to commit something"
first something was probably "the police"
second was probably something like "a crime"

cases trying to prove intent are always worth fighting... they don't know what anyones intentions were, although they can speculate.

Wouldn't it be something like aiding an offender in avoiding detection, or interfering in a police operation. Kinda like hiding goods you know/suspect to be stolen, as you know the cops are unlikely to look at your place.
Or alternatively & perhaps more similar, is being a look out for cops when your mates committing a crime. & after all speeders are the most dangerous criminals of them all

Making flashing lights thing illegal is stupid: isn't the point of speed cameras to reduce speeding anyway? Flashing lights have a very good reducing speed effect on the drivers.
Oh wait ...

Never mind.

Never! The Police aren't out to make revenue

I wonder if you offered to pay the cops if they found your stolen car if it would magically become a priority

I had a warning for the same thing, obstructing the course of justice.

Oh and re the Canadian thing; we have a similar law about alternating flashers. Headlights dont alternate, though - they both flash at the same time.

wig-wag's alternate. They're illegal except on emergency vehicles.
I either overlooked it or the Canadians ignored that particular part of the rule?

I think they are attempting to use Section 23 of the Summary Offences Act

23) Resisting Police, prison, or traffic officer

Every person is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months or a fine not exceeding $2,000 who resists or intentionally obstructs, or incites or encourages any other person to resist or obstruct,—
(a) Any constable, or any prison officer, or any traffic officer, acting in the execution of his duty; or
(b) Any other person acting in aid of any such constable, prison officer, or traffic officer.

And being able to use this seems to hinge on how "resist" or "obstruct" is defined.

Funny how it still includes "traffic officer", though.

OT, but, watch out for Section 8

Actually, the whole act is an interesting read http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/publ ... 53348.html

Hmm
Were it any other situation, warning a criminal that they were about to be stung by the cops would almost turn you into an accomplice.
Is that the angle theyre heading down?

Seems a huge grey area to me...

Seems like it aye, banning radar detectors, banning flashing your lights, next truck rt's will be banned, & texting or using a communication device, hell soon we wont actually be able to drive at all, we'll all be passengers in our own cars. Ok i went too far, but yeah i'd say someone's said hey everyone else who helps someone avoid getting caught commiting a crime is a criminal, so why not drivers. & someone's went hey yeah, let make it consistent.

& i agree its a very gray area, & one that perhaps shouldn't be legislated.

You could argue you thought you saw a family member and were saying hi, as its been said its such a grey area wouldnt stick..

Take it to court i doubt any one jury member would go with it been a crime...

the stuff where it is a simple change should go through relatively simply, the changes to making stuff illegal that currently isn't will take a while.

whether it happens sooner or later, it'll still happen, only way to stop it is to submit a proposal on it, sit back wait and see, and kiwis are notorious for not complaining about anything, and letting the govt walk over them.
