Radio problems after fixing bends in aerial

Postby 85AW20v » Sun Feb 17, 2008 12:10 am

OK. The radio reception in my 92 Lancer was not good as the aerial wasn't powering all the way up due to a slight bend when I caught it on the garage door. I removed the aerial, straightened the bend and refitted it all.

Now, when I turn the key on, the aerial powers all the way up, stays there for maybe 2 seconds then goes down again. No radio reception at all now and the power on/off button on the radio doesn't turn it on. The screen flashes momentarily when the key is turned on with the last station I was tuned to but nothing else happens after that. Radio is out of a 94 Trueno that I got my silvertop out of. It's been going fine the last 4 years until this bend/straighten debacle.

Any ideas anyone?

It looks like the radio is being shut down because aerial power wire is shorted or draws too much current. The Toyota stereos cannot supply high current (only about a few 100mA or so), hence the reason of no powering up. Are you sure you have not changed something in wiring? Pull power plug out of the aerial and see if the radio works. There is a chance of burning out some components inside the radio (the worst would be multiplexor chip if it has one, which would be Matsushita/Fujitsu Ten, impossible to find, anyway not worth fixing).

BTW Truenos do not have power aerial, but they have an RF amplifier which is powered by the wire you are using to turn on the aerial.

Thanks Sergei - it's all sorted now. Don't quite know what I did but it seemed like it was out of sequence - like the radio was saying it should be up but it was down and then when it went up the radio was off so it came down again!! I unplugged the control wires while it was up, turned it all off, plugged it all back in again and now it's fine - very strange.
