I've seen the car. Its one of the best AE86 around (especially for a race car), bar an AU car that came over for targa 2006, and they spent over $100k AU restoring that one!.

the 5.3:1 diff ratio helps iy make at 196 @ the wheels a fair bit. put a 4.1:1 in there and i'd probably only make 170 something

Heh... If this was true, then you'd make more HP in 3rd gear than 4th.....

lower gear = more torque ATW, but at a lower speed, so HP = the same.

With the amount of money he spends on his cars, i believe it.

which you do, next time you're playing with a dyno, do a run in 2nd gear, then a run in 4th

very nice little car. $30k for a full rally car aint bad. espically when u look at the costs of the individual bits. Cage, Link plus, 2 seats, etc etc

yeah everyone says its cheaper to buy, but........ if your building one yourself you generally dont go fork out 30K in one day do you, $1000 here, $1500 there, $400 there etc etc, it takes months if not years to get to that sort of coin, so i think yeah its probably good value but bloody expensive none the less

I've co-driven in this car for Targa in 2005. It is extremely well put togther with no expense spared in its preparation. The handling is amazing - you point it where you want and it goes there. The braking package is - well - amazing too. THe car doesn't nosedive at all no matter how hard you brake - the whole car squats instead. From around 5000rpm you can feel the power coming on and then you're pushed back in your seat until you pick the next gear at about 8500-9000 and it starts all over again. Can't remember what make the clutch is - might be Tilton - but it's triple plate and about 150mm in diameter on a super lightweight flywheel, I think total for complete flywheel clutch assembly is about 3.5kg. It has a TRD LSD and I think crown wheel and pinion, close ratio TRD gearbox kit which was new in 2005 including all bearings and synchros. It's running Motec injection, big ITB's and compresion ratio somewhere around 12.5:1. TRD metal HG, forged pistons out of the States, aftermarket rods - can't remember what - could be Carillo's, ARP bolts everywhere you can have them. I can't remember what cams it running but they are billets. The 196hp was on a dyno in Hamilton - Butlers I think.

We finished first in category by 11 minutes and first in class by 24 minutes and 30th overall only 36 minutes behind Jim Richards in his GT3. Not bad for a 1600cc car. During the rally we caught GT3's in two different stages and the Porsche drivers couldn't belive that we'd even got close to them.

As others have said, it's a lot of car for the money and would cost you at least what he's asking to build a car to the same spec.
See ya

but if you are building a race specific car and have a dead line to build to, you know you gotta fork out some big bills pretty quick.
a good engine build with all the label parts will set you back over $10k in parts alone (brand new of course).
i know building to a budget or having to save up to buy the next part is a bit piecemeal, $30k for a class winning race proven and lets face it (getting more and more) rare car is pretty good.
in my opinion anyway...

Looks like a pretty solid purposeful package, there are a lot of parts on that car that would have added up very quickly let alone development costs etc.
If your intentions were to build something similar, you wouldnt go past it because you would easily throw twice that and a whole lot of time into putting it together properly.
Its amazing how much $$ even a simple properly prepped racecar will swallow- they are'nt just a caged streetcar.
I agree, $30k is a lot for an AE86, but its a proven package in a racers market, so very different situation and fair price. Hell, I wouldnt take $30k for mine.

yep, and at ~NZ$56k, it puts that one on trademe in perspective.
the engine in his car is a hasselgren formula atlantic which as they state in some articles about that car go for US$45k thenselves.
a bit neater in the finishing touches, but in effect your talking about $25k more for an additional 50rwhp.
if money was not an issue, i'd just buy them both...
