So even if I hand the plates in I'm still liable for the whole fine?

I don't mind paying $14 for losing the plates (cost less than gas to get to Mt Roskill) but I don't have $188

yep! sadly, they will charge you the whole fine. Cause to them, you have had the ownership of the car until you tell them otherwise.

You can try and tell them that you sold it months ago, and fill out the MR13B and send it off, but as you will put the date down as been months ago and they have only recived it now, they might think you are just tryin to get out of a fine and set the date of change of ownership as the same day they have recived the notice.

The only way you could get out of paying for the fine would be to get the numb nuts (new owner) to sign a letter saying that he did buy the car off you months ago.....but Im guessing the chances of that actually happening are slim to non!

Report as stolen. I'm down with Pies.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Theres heaps of ways that could have been solved within a few days...

Like take a copy of his licence (by hand if u have too), get an address off him/her..
Borrow someones credit card.. go online an do it yaself.

Thats how i usually do it when i sell a car, just so i KNOW its not in my name.. been there done that an had parking fines etc

ive dereged a car that i swapped before. The new owner didnt change it, after me trying very hard to get in contacct with him for over a month. Didnt answer my calls or texts, didnt answer the door to me when i showed up to his place.

The lady at the LTNZ was very helpful. Youre right in saying that technically you cant dereg a car if you arent in possession of it... but whats to say its not at home, in your carport...?

I wouldn't report it stolen as it could get very messy due to it being fraud, and it he has any proof of you trying to get him to change rego or the likes.... then you could be even further up shi.t creek!

just screw him over the "legal" way. Borrow the $188 and $14, go to ya local post shop and de-reg that rust heap and write it off as a bad call.

Just think up an excuse as to why you have no plates BEFORE you get there so ya don't look suss :P

You'll need to cancel its registration by completing an MR 15 form, available from some Land Transport New Zealand agents. It's very important that you hand in the registration plates at the same time as the MR 15 form. (For information about which agents you can do this at, phone our Motor Registration Call Centre on 0800 108 809.)

Will certainly be doing so in the future!

It's times like these I know I've been brought up very protected, not everyone is a good guy

I'm gonna find a way to cough up the money tomorow and dereg the sucker. Then I'm gonna call up his local cop station and explain what has happened (I'm not breaking the law right?) and just let them know that there is a old, white L300 with Metallic purple bullbars driving round and their cars should keep an eye out. It's fairly distinctive.

Just say you used it as a farm hack and it got away from ya on a steep hill, went over the edge of a cliff and into thick bush, theyre more than welcome to fish the plates out if they want.

They dont give a shit about the plates, just means you dont have to pay the overdue rego if you do hand them in.
Otherwise you pay wats overdue.

I've had EXACTLY the same situation, 4 months later (rego not yet expired) I realised he hadn't changed ownership.

Went to NZ Post, changed the ownership to 'unknown' (and it didn't even cost the $9.20), and voila, not your problem anymore...do it the sooner the better though.

This was about 2 years ago, I hope for your sake that you can still do it!

Can you go to the post shop, claim the plates where stolen, get a new set printed, then hand them in so you don't haev to pay the overdue rego?

I wrote off my daily driver last April, Its rego had run out the previous october, I Finally got round to deregistering it Just before Christmas 2007.
Was gonna cost a Small fortune in overdue rego fees, Took the plates off of it and handed them in with the form and it didnt cost me a cent.

Then sold the car to a guy for a box of beer, last I heard it was in the demolition derby
