Right front wheel/brake making a funny noise

Postby Warren » Fri Mar 07, 2008 8:04 am

Hey all,

Been car pooling for a while to work and the person I catch a ride with has a Nissan Primera Station Wagon.

Every now and then it makes some sort of sqealy/screetchy noise or metal on metal conact. It does at complete random times, i.e. when the car has been traveling for 5mins or 1 hour etc, hot day or cold day etc etc.
But when the brakes are applied the noise goes away but comes back when you let off the brake, but if the brakes are applied hard enough and long enough the noise will dissapear for good until it decides to come back at random.

I thought it could be a dry bearing or something but I'm not sure.
Thanks for any help in advance.

I want to know that to. My Mums Corolla Wagon does that to. I have checked brake pads, they seem fine. Wheel bearing doesn't seem to be broken.
But when I jack up the car the brakes seem to be gently rubbing on the discs and the wheel is hard to turn and won't spin for long. 1/2 or 3/4 turns then stops.

1) binding slides on calliper
2) partially seized calliper
3) warped disc
4) no anti squeal pad
5) pads worn down to indicator
6) glazed pads

Yeah sorry forgot to mention that the brake pad is fine, the disc isn't warped either.

Yeah it is.
He's taken it to his usual mechanic, and he took the wheel off and had a look but could'nt see anything unusual. He even took it for a drive but of course nothing happened of course, surprise surprise. Cars seem fix themselves when you take it to a mechanic :?

Put a thin smear of grease on the side of metal backing plate(anti squeal pad) that goes against the back of brake pad. Just don't get any grease on friction surface of brake pad.

some coppercoat stuff
or wurth do a proper brake paste

if you just use normal grease it melts and runs out and stops doing the job
not to mention the other possible issues with a leaking lube stuff around ya brakes!

I was going to mention the backing plate^^.

Another cause I've found that'll do that is small stones caught somewhere in the caliper. Did the mechanic remove the caliper as well or just the wheel?

Other than that all other causes I know have been listed

I'd be checking the caliper for sticking, i have 1 that every 18months or so decides to stick, but it doesn't look buggered from the outside, but when its taken apart its clear its in need of a new seal kit, try that & see if it works
