Catalytic removal on GT-T

Postby GT-T mod » Sat Mar 08, 2008 7:44 pm

I've been reading for the past hour on the cat removal for various models, etc. Just a couple of questions...

1. How long would it take to remove the cat on a ST215 99 Caldina GT-T? Just wanting to get an idea so I don't get stiffed if I'm taking it to a muffler shop to have done.

2. I have had fitted a 2.5" mandrel bent from the cat back with a straight through resonator, pretty good sound and not too loud. What can I expect sound wise when I remove the cat?

3. Does a high flow cat give much sound restriction? The guy at Magoo mufflers reckons once I remove the cat I would either need a decent resonator or a high flow cat that can give a decent noise dampening otherwise I might be over the limit. Is there any type of high flow cat that can give a decent noise restriction? Where would I get one from without spending too much on? The reason I ask is that I still have a vehicle warranty and I was told that removing the cat would void the warranty. BS or not?

4. I'm still fresh (n00b) with turbos, can I get the cat removed (pending confirmation of warranty) and have a dump pipe (down pipe) in its place and just mount a resonator down the line. The guy the fitted the exhaust reckoned there wasn't much room for a second resonator, ideas on where to fit this or is there a single muffler/resonator that can give enough noise restriction and still allow decent flow?

Dam :(
Do you know where I can get a dump pipe for the Caldina GT-T?

I just had a look and my warranty expired when I paid the vehicle in full, so I can rip that cat out! :D

you have to get a custom made one if your running it off the stock turbo i believe, or there might be some in other countries that you can import but i havent heard of anyone doing this, you can 'gut' the cat out of the stock downpipe however

Is it fairly easy to gut the cat? The guy at Magoo Mufflers said the cat on mine is of the honeycomb design and reckons he can't gut it like the old style straight through cats if I recall him correctly.

FOO! I got a Glanza Starlet, same sorta setup with the cat off the turbo, just pull it out, get the sensors out and attack it with a screw driver and a hammer. ..... Just be carefull not to breath it in, because it is believed to cause cancer .......

Was only a little bit louder, and got a little more performance out of a gutted cat.

It's a a pretty big job to get the cat/down pipe out off the gtt's I probably wouldn't bother.

At least replace it with a decent downpipe or some thing while it's off if you do it.

I'll see if I can source a down pipe for it with the sensor mounts on it. The guy at Magoo Mufflers can turn out one for me but it would probably cost a small fortune compared to the one from Driven Performance...which doesn't fit :(

yea it takes a wee while to get it off.

once off of course.......*cough*anglegrinder....pull out crap.....weld up *cough* and reapply downpipe :)

the noise from mine is fine, mabey a bit rumbly (spelling) but its not raspy. Helps when you dont use a fart-can muffler :P

Thought you might like to know that we are currently in the production phase of a 3" dump pipe for the caldinas!!! They should be available around mid April!

Magoo made me up a downpipe to replace CAT and redid the rest of my system too for a very reasonable price. I have a single bullet-style muffler in the middle and sound is not too bad

Catalytic converters are worth good money for scrap because of the platinum and palladium in them.

Pick A Part buy cats for $35, so most scrap metal dealers must pay more. There's a guy known as the cat guy who buys cats from wreckers that pays between $40 and $80, depending on quantity.

If you ever get a cat cut out at an exhaust shop insist on taking it when the job is done, will help offset some of the cost of the exhaust work.

personally I don't understand why people remove the CAT... it is only a matter of time before they'll be doing checks for emissions at warrant time.

True Barry, but if you have a well maintained/tuned car then shouldn't it fall within the limits? I guess 1st May onwards will tell.

I'll keep hold of my removed cat and see if anyone in Dunedin buys them :)

why not replace it with a high flowing one... they seem ot be doing plenty of that in Aussie, some company called metalcat seems to get the majority of the "props" that the "homies" give.

not an endorsement, but it's what I've read on the net so it must be true.
