Exhaust problem

hey guys

i had a full exhuast system put on my ae101 silver top about 3 years ago and since then iv wrecked about 6 resonators. iv got 2.25 piping all the way thru with 2x resonators in the middle and a dytech muffler on the back.

im wondering y it is that im going thru this many, as they get expensive to replace and dont seem to last long! is this normal or....?

my exhuast sounds like shit wen they need replacing. and im assuming they need replacing because thats wat the guys at magoo's tell me..?

Are you buying the cheap rubbish on trademe, seen 1 of the Stainless mufflers only last 12 months, completely rotted out

everything i have brought has come from magoo's. (except for my muffler which came from mag and turbo). im just wondering whether my whole set up is perhaps putting too much strain on the reso's....but im no expert....

from wat i have been told by the guys at magoos, the inside of the resonators are all cracked i think. thats how i understood it anyways. just seems odd to me that iv gone thru so many so quick. would 2.5" pipe help at all??

Did they weld the outer cone to the inner before welding it to the system? most resonators ive fitted dont actually have the inner part welded to the outer, so the inner sectiion comes apart in service, starts leaking etc.

Im referring to the coby style bullet resonators. Also pays to drill a pin hole in the rear of any muffler to release the moisture, otherwise condensation builds up, helps prevent them from rotting out etc.

Back when i had my ae101 fxgt i was going thru mufflers aswell .My car would back fire and throw flames out the exhaust especially when down changing ,so i figured there was too much back pressure. Made the controversial decsission to go to 2.5 inch pipe as many would say is to big and you loose back pressure, therefore hp. But after i changed i would never look back ,it stopped backfiring sounded better and felt like i had undone the noose around the cars neck, i did notice i lost some down low power but more than made up for the loss in the high end .It revved out so much more freely. I did not dyno test to proof the performance gain but i did consistantly shave .2 of a second off my best previous 1/4 mile time.

0.2 seconds could be the difference between u thinking of that hot girl u had last night and the lights ur looking at lol so im not convinced but the rest of ur argument sounds valid. im just wondering who is going to have to pay for this lol

im having the exact same problem , in 20v .had one blow out , (took six months after i got the 2.25" system) and just rattled and sounded really tinny , got it raplacd under warrenty , then 1 week later it happend again and got it replaced under warrenty , after 1 month it hasnt happend yet again , but sounds alot worse than before ,

Are the mufflers/resonators filled with fibreglass or steel wool packing? When I had the RX7 I was told to avoid fibreglass as the high exhaust temps would melt the packing.

i think theyr fibreglass. ud think that the guys at magoo's would know this kinda thing! they sed that the fibreglass had cracked last time?

get it replaced by another company then and just explain your re-occuring problem, magoo clearly has no idea as you say.

Definatley use a stainless filled one, the glass ones are useless, i had one blow apart on me after 3 sessions at manfield, and the drive to there from palmy.
Put a stainless one in place, with a plug type thing in it and didn't wreck it - did loose power tho but had it made so bolted in flange type so i could take it out for track use

I had a similar problem with the exhaust on my old ford escort with the cammed up 1600 in it back in the day.

I had got the exhaust done at midas who had a guarantee of like on or two years on their stuff. After about the forth resonator destructed they just bit the bullet and put some really good gear (I can't remember what it was it was so long ago) on it and that seemed to last untill the car rusted out from around it.

So the solution is to get a guarantee on the work and keep taking it back till they give in and give you something decent, or use better than average stuff from the get go like has been mentioned above.
