Postby solitaire » Tue Mar 18, 2008 11:26 am

Hiya.

Any recomendation where i can get custom intercooler piping done? Trying to get my car going on a budget so im more interested in function than form. Will need to get one pipe custom definitely as it needs to bend under something.

Any leads greatly apreciated :D

Never actually occured to me i could do it myself... Its a point i suppose... Its probably harder than just welding it up though yes?

Could go exhaust shop, just looking to see if anyone know of someone of the sweet spot of quality and price

i dono about auckland but AUTO BEND in chch are really good. you can make up the piping shape by using one fo these swimming pool noodle floaty things and a bit of wire in the middle and bend to shape, then they scan it or somethin and hey presto, custom piping, pretty cheap too.
surely there is someone in aucks that does somethin similar.

actually any engineer/fabricator will be able to make it for you take them a noodle bent to the correct shape.

most of the cost in getting pipeing made is the dicking around they have to do to get it to fit properly, not the actual welding and cutting as that takes no time at all, and the pipe is pretty cheap too.

or, if you have or have access to a welder just go to a exhaust shop get a few doughnuts a few 90s and 45sa bid of straight and have a crack yourself, thats what ill be doin should cost less that 100 buckas :D

gross... mild exhaust steel goes rusty, looks trashing and you will end up suckin what ever rust forms on the inside into your engine :)

alloy bends are the way to go. cost me $100 for 2 3' 90degree bends and 1 3' U-bend. went and bought a drop saw from supercheap and 'modified' it to take a steel cutting blade so i can chop it all too suit. wrap the joins in tape were i want them to be welded, take them to a friend in the business who does tig all day and get him to weld them for me :)

of course $100 was my cost for the tubing , retail would be sumwere round the $300 mark. um, had a length of samco 3' silicone lying round so using that to join to IC and throttle. repco sells RACEPRO bolted clamps so using them.

alloy looks a shit load tidier too.. and can get fancy with some autosol if your thatway inclined haha.

if you were local i could give you a hand.

contact tube bending in east tamaki, they do alloy and steel mandrel bends in a range of sizes, bends and piping are cheap, take cash as they normally just sell to big companies,

any bends in their scrap bin are cheaper again. can also get straight piping.

then just cut the piping, mark the piping on both sides of join, like A-A or something with a couple of alignment marks,

then take that to a welder and get them to finish it.
