good towing vehicles?

Hey

so ive been looking at grabbing myself a vehicle to suit towing a car trailer + car .

so what do you guys use? or what do you consider a good towing vehicle?

im after something i can kinda double up as a work(mechanic) vehicle, eg ute, van
and would be nice if it was diesel too.

so what are your guys opinions?

I find my work van 2000~ 2.4L petrol to be a good tow vehicle, have used it for fully loaded furniture trailor no worries and towed a big merc van out of a mud hole instantly with it too. Much to the other drivers amazement :lol:

Better options out there i'm sure, but it did it no worries at all, can store a lot of work stuff in to too 8)

1KZTE Prado would be good, though not all that much room if you wanna carry a heap of tools.

nissan safari or landcrusier are all round good 4wds

will tow anything and go just about anywhere

I have a 2001 Mitsubushi L300 van, 2.8 turbo diesel. I have towed a car trailer with a E36 bmw easily with it

Going any distance I try to use the parents Transit campervan.

Transit loaded with the car on the trailer and gear will still drag off there 3.0l diesil hilux (3L not 1kZ) when it's empty.


But IMO in reality, anthing 1KZTE would be the go,
Granvia, later hilux, surf etc` etc.

Yeah, you can get the 4.2 turbo diesel.. they're quite pricey (mates' brother in law paid $13k for a jacked up cruiser with 330,000km!), but you'll have a truck that can pull planets.. :wink:

But if you're looking for something cheap, they're not the most animal but older Terrano 2.7TDs are dirt cheap, just don't get an auto one and check for rust around the rear seatbelt mounts.

What sort of budget are you looking at?

Yeah the Landcruisers come as a 4.2L turbo diesel and the Safari/Patrol also come with a 4.2L turbo diesel.

Having said that, you reckon you'll need to run something like that? With the Prado your running costs and servicing costs are going to be a fair bit lower and will probably do all you want to. The big Patrols take over 10L of oil per service and need 2 oil filters.

I personally wouldn't be getting a Terrano

all my oils i can get for free, so its only filters im worried about when it comes to services. other than that its just diesel which i can get at a discconnted price at times :wink: and road user charges.

so yeah land crusier or safari sound like not a bad option, dont have a price in mind yet just sort of looking around, but i dont want a petrol.

i have a 95 3.1 diesel manual swb bighorn which does the job nicely, i got it for a trademe bargain price of $2900.
previously i had a 94 v6 pajero which had plenty of grunt but had an unhealthy appetite for fuel.

the bonus of a 4x4 is you ca jam it into low ratio if you have a steep driveway to negotiate.
i would also stay away from terrano's.

my mates hilux which is now 1ggte used to have the 2.4lt mtor towed a huge car trailer and s13 from taupo sweet no troubles, this trailer takes up almost 1 and 1/4 lanes on the mway :lol: :twisted:

I personally have used a toyota camry 3L, and a isuzu my 2.6 petrol for my towing. (using a tow dolly)

The mu would have been the best, drove no different when towing (even though I left the handbrake on in the car I was towing) :lol:

my parents had one of those 3.3L petrol terranos, it went well and I never had to put petrol in, but i'd have one for just the sound the engine made :oops: I do drive a 1.6L tho, so no suprises there...

Actually the bighorns are not too bad although buy a manual Irmsher one versus any of the others which are lemons by comparison. I tow Qikstarlie to Meremere with it quite often with tyres, spare gearbox, big tool box, 3 ton floor jack etc etc - heading south up the Bombays it sits in 5th the whole way and heading north up it only just needs 4th. Best thing we did was put a front mount cooler on it and then make an air box to sit ontop of the engine and draw from the bonnet vent which made a huge difference to the amount of torque it makes.

Ultimately I'd love to get an 80 series? landcruiser with the 24valve 4.2 litre turbo diesel. I'd say they would be a fairly impressive tow vehicle.
