Requirements for a cert

Postby fuzzilogyc » Tue Apr 01, 2008 3:54 pm

Looking at getting a cert for my coilovers and wondering if i need WOFable tires. If they do, i guess i should get some new tires before taking it down...
How does it work? Do they only check what you are getting certed? How long does the inspection usually take?
Cheers

yes you will need good tires. as for how long, depends who you go to and how much your getting done. just coilovers shouldn't take too long..

i just had my rolla liftback in for certing for it's conversion, they noted everything, the momo steering wheel on a bosskit, the levin front seats, the factory 14*6 steelies, the front subframe, lowering springs, brakes, oh yeah, and the change of engine. it's basically a wof with a fine tooth comb, and if anythings not standard, but is safe, they note it on the plate. if you fail the cert though, you gotta pay to get it rechecked, so best to go over it beforehand to make sure they don't ping you on anything.

pay for recheck? 8O
thats not what i gathered from searching the posts on this forum. i read that the certifier just gives you a list of stuff to do (if anything), you go and do it, then he checks it off...

same here, believe if a re-check is required it's included in the cost.

car flew through, so didn't need a recheck, so not sure wether it was a recheck within the 2 months or not that cost extra

cert

Postby docTRD » Wed Apr 02, 2008 4:22 pm

i just had my cressida certed 2 weeks back and i needed few things for the cert so did them but the guy from nostaliga motors said they usually charge an extra $100 for recheck but waived it on myn since it was just small things like securing the high stop light and needed a fan shroud. so i guess it depends how anal the certifier is !

I think certifiers can charge whatever they want anyway, so perhaps different guys will have different conditions/costs associated with a retest?

Here's my dilemma.

I might look at an engine conversion in the near future...going from a 175hp SR16VE to an SR20VE with a handful more kilowatts but a bucket load more torque. At what point is a cert required, considering SR20's are actually fitted to Pulsars from factory?(SSS for example)

ANY increase in displacement requires a cert

Much like how anything factory fitted with a 3K that now has a 4K should be certified. Though warrant inspectors usually go by that fact that the difference between a 12hp engine and a 12hp engine that revs out 2 grand further is nothing.

i thought it was a 25% increase in power and you needed a cert (aslong as it was a bolt-in etc). have they changed it now?

Its always been like this, and is explained in the VIRM.

Cert needed for:
- increase in displacement
- increase in engine weight
- increase in engine power
- different fuel
- modified mounting points
- different engine configuration
- etc

http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/certif ... -13-v3.pdf
Table 13.1.1

The 20% increase thing is separate from that, it is for when you modify a standard factory fitted engine.
