Kid clocked at 178km/h.. What do we really do?

Postby DeeCee » Thu Apr 03, 2008 11:01 am

After reading through 5 pages of feedback on this story, you really do have to wonder what efforts are really made to curb this type of reckless behaviour?

Is NZ too liberal? Are parents too lax in teaching kids responsibility? Do the laws protect young people too much? Should there be restrictions in licencing associated with engine size/type? Do we need to introduce mandatory mnimum 3rd party insurance? Are lending institutions not being responsible and taking on too many bad loans? Do we enforce the law enough? Shuold public monies be used to provide resources or outlets for these people to use? Police taking easy targets instead of fighting real crime? 3 strike laws and car crushing? Just a few make it worse for many? etc etc etc

Personally I agree with most of the above lol..

what are your thoughts?

Don't forget we recently had they dude from chch advocating some sort of representation of "car enthusiasts" here.. then again, he didn't exactly seem like the brightest chap in the world..

I thought some discussion would be nice as the week draws to a close :)

Herald wrote:'Blowing off steam,' says teen clocked at 178km/h

By Elizabeth Binning

The number on the right of the panel is the speed at which the police car was travelling.

A teenager clocked doing 178km/h through a notoriously dangerous intersection told police he was simply "blowing off steam".

Stunned officers say there is no excuse for the 19-year-old's irresponsible driving, especially as he had two passengers.

"It was absolutely mad to drive like that," said Senior Sergeant Andrew Berry, tactical co-ordinator for Counties Manukau East police.

Mr Berry said a constable in a patrol car was driving north along Te Irirangi Drive on Sunday night when his radar picked up the teenager's Japanese import coming through the Ormiston Rd intersection.

"He initially thought the radar gave him a mistaken reading because he couldn't see the car. Then he saw it coming, locked it at 178 and it came through the intersection so quick that he couldn't even get a registration."

The officer found the car stopped at the next traffic lights, where the driver explained travelling at more than twice the 80km/h limit by saying he was blowing off steam.

Mr Berry said: "There are some of our most dangerous intersections along Te Irirangi Drive, Ormiston being one of them, and he blows through that intersection so fast that the first thing the officer knew that the car was coming was when the radar picked him up at that speed."

If the car had collided with another vehicle, the combined impact speed would have been about 250km/h, which would have been "certainly fatal to the three occupants of the offending vehicle plus anybody they collided with".

The teenager was charged with driving at a dangerous speed and operating a vehicle recklessly, and his car was confiscated.

We need to start setting consequences for people actions based on what could of happened rather than what some little shit luckily got away with... What if this kid was screaming through this intersection as an abulance was passing through carrying a pregnant mother? Different story then eh? We need to harden up.

What an idiot.

It's really worrying to know we share the roads with these idiots.

I'd say! What sort of idiot breezes past a cop at 180km and then stops at the next lights? Shoulda at least run one more!

*No I didn't miss the point, I'm just stirring sh*t.

I was about to say Once there is a venue provided for people to do this sort of thing safely then you can start getting real tough on them. Then I remembered that there ARE venues provided, hammer the little mother intercourser.

you hit on the head ae86less, if some little sh1t wants to be a hard man and boost his 100% finance hi-performance import through what is really a suburban street he should be hung drawn and quatered. there are safer ways to 'blow off steam" for f*cks sake invest in a punching bag (not the human variety either). and if speed is your thing then take it off the road onto the track or strip. they are out there, although I would probably leave and never return if all these losers started using the same circuit as my regular.

with regards to the speeding, yes we all break the speed limit from time to time, but f*ck me twice the limit through a notorious section of road, thats in the suburbs! what a jizz rag!

i totally agree that there should be some way of prosecuting based on consequences that could have occurred, although i realise legally this would probably have no standing a our "courts of justice". and no doubt even as a law there would be some loop hole for these cum stains to get off through.

NZ is too f**Ken soft, we will never over come these problems until consequences of such actions are actually hard enough to deter people.

Confiscate the car is a good start. Finish it by crushing it or having the government part it out at $1 reserve auctions on trademe. (This only applies if the car is not stolen etc)

Get rid of the "Anti-smacking law". The worst thing this counrty has done yet! Now what can his parents do...tell him to sit in the corner for 5min and think about what he has done?? (come the $^%@ on!!)

There is a hugh difference between smacking and beating a child! Beating a child is wrong! but if I say 13, and was to steal someones car from here, and then go out and trash it for a few hours before I got caught, and my only punishment was to sit in the corner for 10min??? 2 hrs of fun for 10min of bordem.......??? What kind of example is that setting for all the 10yr olds out there today?
(and dont worrie...im not into steelin cars. only using it as an example)

P.S. I hope that car is crushed already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

problem is with crushing cars, what if they are bought on finance.

then really its not their car, i reckon in this situation their should be some contractual obligation that the finance company repos the car and sells it on, at $1 reserve on TM so i can get a bargain, and the 'owner'/driver has to pay the difference on the finance plus any court appointed fines/convictions etc.

I may not of put my point across properly... what i am saying is that if someone drives at 180km/h and hits someone they get done with reckless endangerment or something...

If someone is driving through an intersection at 180km/h and doesnt hit anyone it should still qualify as reckless endangerment...

yeah thats what i was tryna get at but then thought about if joe bloggs say disobeyed a stop sign or whatever, yes he could have endangered someone, or hit , hurt or killed someone, and then be stung with something much more serious than just running a stop sign, which by the way i am not condoning nor do i do, i just used it as an example,

no tears here, finance or not crush it. At least then finance companies might not be able to freely lend money to people on their learners buying a high performance cars. A the chance of payments not being made would surely increase after said persons car got crushed..

Finance is too easy to get and royally screws a lot of people over. So maybe if a car can be crushed, other guarantees will be required to gain finance rather than just the title of the car.

The law wont let the finance companies do that. The law states that if the account is up to date (payment wise) then the finance company can not repo the car at all.
Plus if the car is on finance and the courts seize the car, and the courts sell the car via auction, the finance company doesnt get the money, the courts keep the money for all expencies and fines, then the finance company get the remainder...which is 7/10ths f%$k all sadly!

There is the gay NZ law again hard at work for the people...NOT!!

Oh yea...plus finance companies cant say no to a 19yo buying a brand new RX7 thats been modded to tits and back, as that becomes discrimanation (sp)

The company I work for set lending policies to safe guard themselves by saying that anyone under 20 has to have a parent guarantor, and a few times we have called the parents to make sure they know what sort of car there 18yo kid is buying...and 9 times out of 10 they dont. Needless to say, they didnt buy that car

yeah bzg i was talking from the point of view of "ownership" of the vehicle but stalker seems to have cleared that up. i totally agree that the finance for people to get performance cars who shouldnt be driving them is probably one the major factors in the number of these incidents.

178 on a nice straight piece of open road is bad enough, but in the $&#$% suburbs?? what a complete tard, just chop his balls off.

and its probably those 1/10 parents that need to harden the f*ck up with their kids

unless of course they are the car enthusiasts as oppossed to the boy racer types.

btw i reckon we need some other title thats a bit cooler than car enthusist to distinguish ourselves from boy racers. problem is anything 'cool' will probably be adopted by a new crowd of f*cktards

Yeah... i think its only really doable where excess speeds are involved... perhaps a compulsory charge of reckless endangerment is in order if you go 40k's over the speed limit?

I would like to see a 18 year old car enthusiast that isnt a "boy racer"... its all about revving your engine and attracting females that that age...
