how many people do you think would continue to act this way if their mates one by one get sent there? 8)
I prefer the "fired out of a canon into the sun" option - but we are on the same page

Agree that there will always be people who do not comply... How about proof of insurance with registration or something like that? Just bouncing ideas here. Followed by a "If you are caught without insurance your car gets impounded and you dont get it back until you have proof of insurance and $500" - even if its not their car...

I agree for learner drivers, but not forced on everyone. The main problem would be that then we are all at the mercy of insurance companies - we all need insurance so they'll make sure to fleece us as much as possible. They will dictate who does what and make the rules. One look at the state the UK is in would make me very afraid of giving them more power - it'd be worse than letting the government run things :)

There needs to be a number of changes all aimed at producing better drivers - and I believe that comes from better training and more education, unfortunately this is a long term solution - not an election year attention grabbing quick fix, so it's probably not going to happen . . . ever :)

They do something like that in canada, and it's retardedly expensive. Not hard to regulate at all though, just include the cost in registration fees.

Then no insurance = no rego, get snapped and you're off the streets and slapped with a big fine.

Hell, could have a rule - do it once you get fined, do it twice and you're car is taken until you pay to renew the rego and insurance.

make young drivers go to a boot camp - not hiding in the boot. but make them spend 12 weeks doing intense training to get their licence. Run by army dudes and rally drivers etc. You cant leave the premises till ya pass  make them get up at 5am and run 10km to fetch 5L of petrol

Even taxi & bus drivers should be made to do it!
60% of the time it breaks every time

Yep, there is only one insurance company in Canada, ICBC, and they dictate all insurance costs. We (myself and the two friends I came here with) pay almost $600 for 3 months of comprehensive insurance on a 1990 Ford Explorer. The reason its so expensive, is that people can be sued in Canada, so it covers almost $2million in personal liability if you hit someone and they decide to sue you.

Most cars over here are "trucks" (or utes in NZ), with lifter kits that jack them up to ridiculous heights. Ironically, the only Japanese cars with loud exhausts, are Hondas  (no jokes!). Trucks are the best way to handle the icey roads in Winter, and "look good" in Summer. I'll see if I can get some pictures of the insane trucks some people drive.

In the 6 months I've been here, I've seen ONE Suby WRX STi with a loud exhaust, and not a single Evo. No Supra's, one Batmobile, no SW20 MR2's, two AE82 Corollas, and one AW11. The rest have all been Honda's (with the Civic being the highest sold car in Canada for a couple of years running), and American model vehicles.

I like the comp insurance idea...but the NZ government needs to think about it properly and do it right!
Cause with third party, 90% of insurance companies dont care what car their customer is driving. So for something like $200 per year, anyone can have third party ins.
Doesnt matter if you are driving a mini, or the HKS drag car, you can still write off the porsche in front of ya.

There are a few Toyotas, just no performance models :P

And along with the cold weather comes 10 metres of total snowfall for the season, with a current base of around 6 metres (on the mountain where I'm working). Snowboarding heaven :D!
