Landcruisers, best selection

Postby beeker » Sat Apr 19, 2008 8:31 am

About to start looking at a landcrusier as a tow car for a BIG boat, and use as an allround hack.

Look at the ~80 series (the 4litre D turbo).

My questions are:
> Any real advantage in paying more for the 24 valve over the 12v?
> Anything to avoid to look out for?
> I assume they are rated to tow 3.5tones? Reliable for this i assume?

Ideally i would get an airbag, but they seem scarce

Comments?

how much money have you got to spend?
a 24V will set you back approx 10K over a 12V cruiser.
If you want the most bang for the least buck.......

purchase a roughish HDJ81 cruiser off trade me for $7-10K
add a small intercooler
add a 3 inch big bore exhuast
get the turbo rebuilt with a larger compressor wheel
overhaul the brake calipers, replace the discs and check the front wheel bearings as all these parts are starting to show their age in these vehicles.
Check for cracking to the chassis rail where the steering box bolts thru it.
if its an auto, get the trans serviced and put a large external oil cooler on it. once that is all done.

I know of a few people been done at weighbridges towing big boats with big vehicles.

Remember class one's max is 4500kg including whatever your towing
