Speaker Cable. Type and Where to source?

Postby UZZ30 » Wed Apr 23, 2008 12:28 am

Hi Guys,

Just a query regarding Speaker cable.

Im after a type that has very little noise interference and will supply a top quality sound from my amps to my speakers. I believe Oxygen Free Copper 12AWG is the gauge I Should be looking at getting? Is their any benefit going to a thicker cable to around 10AWG? Or would I just be wasting money then?

Main thing Im wanting to know, which Shops in Auckland supply good quality speaker cable at decent prices too? IE which places would you recommend?

Any advise would be great.

I got my last lot from Dicksmith, seems to be pretty good, wasn't cheap but looks to be good quality.

How reliable that info is i'm not sure, sounds aren't my specialty

All copper should be OFC

I went to a car audio shop and bought fusion cable, good quality good price.

Tsunami cable is quite expensive, better than fusion, i dont know...

If you're that concerned about interference, you can get shielded stuff from Jaycar. Pricey though

as method states, OFC is a must.

Overall, there is no difference apart from aesthetics between the different cables. eg monster cable performs the same as generic cable.

Remember that copper is copper and cable is not optimised for electron flow.

In the end, buy within your budget and ensure that there the cable is at least as thick as they claim.

Also look at strand count and flexibility of the cable as well.
More strands mean less gaps between the strands of copper so you reduce the risk of oxidation. Less flexible cable is harder to route.

You essentially want the cable to be able to carry the electrical load without the cable becoming a barrier and filter if it cannot carry the electrical load placed upon it.

Size the cable to application :)

hope this helps,

Oxygen free copper.

From what I understand it makes for a more clear, pure and noise free sound.

Makes sense really.

well its more about the lack of oxidation that can occur if the copper isn't oxygen free.

If it oxidises then its corroding, much like rust. So its not going to act like it should.. therefore the performance is reduced.

It doesn't impart a sonic signature because it is oxygen free. It just acts as normal because it hasn't oxidised.

Think iron/rust and structural integrity if your car had rust eating away at a chassis rail.

it should say on the cable insulation what gauge it is and whether it is OFC or not :)

OFC is just a marketing scam

Also the factory wiring from the Amps in the Soarer is pretty decent to start with, unless you're throwing a lot of power down em, or want something more pretty, I wouldn't bother replacing it.

i've seen non-OFC corrode in a variety of cables
I'll easily stick to no name OFC unless i want the bling stuff lol

at least you won't catch me buying Monster cable lol

I really can't be bothered arguing about cables.......again.

Anyway, you'd be hard pressed to find much speaker cable that isn't Oxygen Free

Thats true, however mine came with the sad non cd tape player. So doubt it had the factory speaker and sub amps. For one theres certainly no sub so that rules that out.

Not sure about the speakers though, if they used an internal amp from the HU, or an external one some place. You would know more about this than me though!

 No idea sorry, although the Tape only unit was the one with an inbuilt amp. Checking your boot would be the easiest way to be sure :P
