this might seem like a silly question, but how would a group B rally car go against a modern day wrc car with less power? were they really that much faster than the cars today?

Moern day ones are substantially quicker, pretty much due to huge advances in drivetrain, suspension and tyres.

I've always wondered that too.

Especially with the mountains of torque and advanced engine management, suspention and AWD systems

The WRCs handle alot better but id say in straight line speed (which really doesn't matter) some of the late Group B cars would win.

in stage times, the few that can still be compared, a modern group N car can out pace the groub B cars. in the tight twisty bits at least. 25 years of tyres and suspension development count for a lot!!!

as a clue to how much tyres mean....
saw a thing on tv a few years back on the SWRT.
they were doing testing and they took a bog stock STI off the show room floor, put the WRC tyres on it and ran it over the test stage. Then the put the stock tyres on the WRC car and same driver ran the course again.
the difference was stuff all.
so in those conditions, the tyres = WRC suspension and diffs!

the new cars are power limited by inlet restrictors so they are intentionally tuned to make huge amounts of torque . they are only like 300hp powerwise.

the group b cars werent that quick by todays standards, they had crazy amounts of power and struggled to put it down, the amazing thing is that they were even brave enough to try.

oh and the myth that a group b car that did an exhibition run at some f1 track in the 80's, and would have placed 6th on the grid of the F1 that year is apparently just that, a myth.
i read it originated from someone that did run a group b car at a track in the dry and the f1 race that year was in the pissing wet, and the rally car was close to their times, but thats more a testament to how quick the f1 cars were to be able to run that quick in the rain :lol:

There is a website somewhere that compares the Ford Focus rally car against the Audi Group B. On the less techincal straighter tracks the group B was faster but more technical ones the group B was no match for the later model rally car....
Can't seem to find it at the moment though

so who owns the 3rd one? there is only Lino's replica on the entry list, the only other ones i know of are incomplete, but should be ready for the Silver Fern.
