Clutch Driven plate orientation

Postby xsspeed » Tue May 20, 2008 11:52 am

Hey guys maybe a dumb qustion but ive just put my clutch on and am unsure if its the right way around,

looking at the clutch assembly side on as shown there is a larger protrusion from the clutch on on side than the other, currently i have this side facing the clutch cover (right hand side below), and the smaller protrusion side facing the flywheel (left hand side below)

Image

is this correct, i was trying to go by what was done on the old clutch but that was a pbr and this is toyota genuine, so slightly different shapes, added to the fact that i dropped the old driven plate when i pulled the cover off so not 100% sure which way round it was.

unfortunately the driven plate doesnt say flywheel side or whatever.

hopefully i dont need to unbolt and take pics to explain better, unless of course its on the wrong way.

also anyone in central auckland got a clutch alignment tool? i've so far just lined it up using a screwdriver.

skinny part to the flywheel, fat part to the pressure plate, you will not be able to bolt on pressure plate properly if put wrongly.

easiest way to align a clutch without the tool is by feeling the lip on the pressure plate to the clutch plate. theres usually three spots where you can do this, spaced evenly around the circumference. if the lip is the same on all three, your clutch is aligned!

just make a clutch alignment tool, all you need is a 15cm piece of broom stick and 10 min's on a lathe..

This man speaks the truth, no other way works better, unless you doing a multi plate clutch.

yeah, i actually prefer this method to the clutch alignment tool, particularly on FWD vehicles with no spigot bearing.
