Mainland Challenge - Offroad, this coming weekend.

Postby RedMist » Mon May 05, 2008 8:44 pm

The biggest offroad event in Canterbury is on this weekend.
A two day event of pretty dramatic carnage. 175km enduro on Saturday followed by bump and grind of close courters short course racing on Sunday.
If you're keen on viewing its probably best to come to the Sunday event as you'll see considerably more of the track, cars and damage. Racing both days starts at 11am.
Saturday at number 10 road, off Tram road, just north of the Waimak bridge.
Sunday racing is at the canterbury offroad club track, Weedons Ross Road.
More details can be found on the CORC website. www.dirt.org.nz

For a first outing the car performed fantastically. Its got tonnes of power to spare. Although the course had some tight sections I only used 4th and 5th. The only problem we had today was rolling two tyres off the bead. I had the fastest lap times by far even though I was only at 80%. Had the guy that won come in behind me at one stage and I left him in a shower of shyte... that is until I rolled the second tyre off the bead.

.... looks like I'll be investing in beadlocks then!

Car went fantastically well. First in class 1, second overall even with three pit stops for tyres rolled off the bead.

Impressive effort!

I just want one, looks like a heap of fun.

I love that photo of you above the green one, makes you look like your about to drive over the top of him and squash him for getting in your way

some good coverage of you there, Daniel.
you appear to have the new toy flying (literally and metaphorically), the Jimco does look very bulky compared to the likes of the Cougar in the same race, but looks to keep the power down better.
I've been a bad bad boy. I should read the rules and behave before I get spanked by an admin

Jimco is huge compared with the cougars. Unfortunatley I'll have to compete with some very high powered, light weight examples in the national finals. Power down? Thats its biggest problem. Its got tonnes of it (power) and its sitting far too high at the moment. With no anti roll and high CG it rolls and pitches like its on a high sea. This consequently lowers the weight on the inner drive wheel and allows it to spin. The Jimco is currently point and squirt only.
I thought the coverage made offroading look rather slow... a bit like watching roundy rounders and finding they are doing 160kph on the back end of the straights... when the look like they are doing 20kph.
All I can say is it was bloody fast in the cockpit.

Anything up to 220kph. But generally considerably slower, the things are bricks afterall. They tend to be very very squirrely at that pace. In the Mainland Challenge probabaly around 170ish (based on gear ratio, tyre size calcs). Motorcross helmet ends up acting like a wing at that speed. It lifts from your head and is only restrained by your chin strap.
