Electrical Problem - Urgent

Postby solitaire » Sat May 24, 2008 1:39 pm

Hi All,

Pretty freaked out right now...

I just finished putting an amp and some components in our AE111 Wagon. It was all plugged in and running well, a 50amp fuse built into the amp and a 40 amp fuse by the battery. The unit is grounded to the seat mounting point.

I had just finished putting the car back together when i remembered the wife moaning that the cigarette lighter doesnt work.

Ill note that i had the car stereo running all morning fine, the key set to AC but has been set to on a few times when i was testing the electric windows.

I messed about with the cigarette lighter connections a bit, re-seated them and plugged in an ipod to it and the ipod started charging... So i put the dash back together. Once all was finished i tried to fire up the ipod and found it was no longer receiving power. I sprayed a little bit of crc into the cigarette lighter in the hope of cleaning the connections (now regretting this) i then put a fluke meter onto the connections and found the voltage to be 7 volts and slowly decreasing.

I tried to start the car and the starter motor went "click" and everything in the car died, no dash warning lights, no stereo, no clock.

I unplugged the fuse from the amp in case i had done something and checked the battery, just over 12 volts. I then set the key to "on" and check again, still the same reading.

I have checked the fuses but there are some big black ones that i cant see through so im not sure how to check them.

Anyone have any ideas? The wife gets home at 5pm and she is likely to be less than impressed 8O

I had thought that because it was set to on with not even a clock and the battery was at 12v that would mean that the battery was fine... but ill dash down and do that now...

Are you sure the other battery is fully charged. It just sounds like flat. It doesnt matter your battery has 12V with no load on it. Turn the head lights on for a second and measure it with lights on.

Poor Main Earth. Trace where the battery ground terminates at the chassis. Remove it, clean the contact and where the contact mates to the chassis.
Or poor main positive connection to the starter. Same solution as above.
The answer is Helmholtz!

Yeah, make sure the battery you use is charged.

It could have 12V at 0.1 amps but only 3 or 4 volts when a 50A starter is trying to crank over

Yeah a 5 star mongoose thingie

It was the battery - 16 hour charge later (8am this morning) and she roared into life which was lucky because we really needed the corolla today (been out and about with a 2 axle braked trailer all day... what a trooper the wagon is)

Thanks again everyone - sorry i did not update sooner but only found out this morning and had to dash out when it started.
