Air Temp whole going down the strip

Postby cat007 » Mon Jun 09, 2008 1:09 pm

Hey all,

After looking at one of my data logs I noticed my intake air temp seemed way too high. Sitting around 35 degree's while in the pits, then as soon as I start staging and all the way down the strip, temps get up to and sit on about 40-42 degree's C.

That seem's pretty hot to me. Isn't it?

My air temp sensor is one off a 1JZ-GTE and is located just before the throttle body.

Any thoughts on this appreciated.

Thats interesting, what were the ambient temps? Do you have any readings for temps before your turbo?

Could be interesting to see where its picking up all the heat from.

Would have thought the temps would at least drop once the IC had air flowing over it.

The run was later in the day at the recent Suprafest. So not "hot". Not sure what ambient temps where.

I dont have readings before my turbo sorry.

I'll post up the datalog when I get home. Thought I had one at work but cant find it,

here's a screen shot of some of the data log.
bottom is intake air temp.

1247 is staging with launch control and 1287 is me taking off down the strip. I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out from there :P

I dont know how applicable it is. But I run two silly aftermarket MR2 intercoolers in my offroader. I was very scared about thier efficiency so I placed an IAT before the intercooler and one just before the TB.

On the dyno (ie little air flow) it ran 70-75 degrees before the intercooler and 21-25 degrees after. This may be the very clean path for airflow as there isnt anything behind or before the intercooler.

What are you using to datalog your ecu parameters with?

I'm using the ECU software to log everything - Stinger 4424.

21-25 seems DAM cold! Lucky you! What was the ambient air temp on the day?

Ambiant must have been around the 14 degree mark. (I was in a T shirt)In all honesty I cant remember. It's the details that stagger you that you remember, such as shyte intercoolers actually working.

I wish Link would get thier act together and enable the logging memory on the G3's. For the moment I'm hunting for a cheap EEE PC.

20-25°C sounds about right if the temp after the turbo was only 75°C.

Typical turbo outlet temps are usually in the 110-130°C range and around 40°C would be reasonably efficient and certainly nothing to worry about.

The stinger only logs through a laptop. It doesn't have the ability to log all on its own unfortunately.

G3's have 4kbits of memory on board... just no way to address it. DUH!

The turbos werent working hard. Max boost was 14.7lb and I had overpowered the NZEFI dyno at about 4k RPM so it was only power runs from there to 7k.
Latest race saw me run the car hard on a warm day and the inlet plenums only felt mildly warm. I'll have to get a solid state device to log to!!!

i've always been interested in intake temps too. is there any easy / cheap way to monitor this?

as in, can you buy like an air temp thing that i could plug into my intake somewhere, and just have a readout inside the cabin?

Open wire K type thermocouple and Thermometer $39. Slip it under your intercooler piping, or glue it in there somehow. Or you could mount a solid sensor in the manifold, but that will more than likely heat soak and not show actual air inlet temp.

14.7lb isn't too low. I was only running about 16psi yet the temps were a lot higher!

I was attempting to keep the boost lower than 12lb. No such luck with the internal Garrett wastegates.
Have you checked your compressor map? You may be well out of the central efficiency islands.
Still I think the anomoly here is not your high IAT it's my low one.
