Modding P Plates?

Postby FST4RD » Tue Jun 10, 2008 7:16 pm

I'm not talking bout chroming them or anything....

But is it legal to say strip the black off the plate and redo it in red yourself? Or do you have to go through the plates place to "upgrade" them to red at about $300 odd dollars?

I really like the red plates but really don't want to spend all that money to get new ones!

^^^ Nope, there's a website that I can't remember the name of that you just put your details in, pay via CC and the plates gets sent out to you. Had new P-Plates sent out to me earlier in the year.

I understood it was illegal to modify the plates you were supplied with.
You could always ask Land Transport NZ, they even have 0800 numbers...

They'll say no anyway, cause they'll just want revenue.
I wonder though if you did mod them to red whether or not there's a database somewhere thats says XXXXXX plate is black in X design....

Yeah exactly, I dont think its on your registration if your plate is black, red or any colour haha. So aslong as it looks good no one will notice I say

I'd be willing to bet the colour of the plate is recorded somewhere, coz something other than black is less common and thus this info could be useful.

But if you did it red and properly and made it look good I don't think the cops would care, there's a few getting round now with Red plates and they would have to go to decent lengths to find out otherwise.

... until you find an asshole cop who happens to notice the plate looks dodgy.

In otherwords unless its perfect you're opening yourself up for trouble. Better to go about things properly in the first place.

From what I recall the color of the plates is noted with LTNZ. Ill have to find the original paperwork for my red ones.

Says $21 for standard or $32.50 for Red.... Wonder if that means that you could get them remade in Red for $32.50? or whether that means if you already have red you could get them remade for $32.50....
