I've recently gone through a similar situation as I have the sound of a wee one calling and wanted a decent wagon. Having lived in the U.K for 6 years and driving Citroens / Pugs/VWs my advice is don't touch them at all. Citreons and pugs are the same cars anyway just different bodies with shitty cheap not made to last parts. Renaults are just as bad. The only good Golfs to buy are the mark 1s or if you can afford it the mark 5s. I would reccomend a new mini cooper s. Not the old style supercharged but new style turbo but these probably cost an arm and a leg. I think the engine was made in conjunction with toyota? or was that peugeot? What about a Focus st? Vauxhall made a corsa and astra vxr I don't know if Holden did the same. Not 4wd but still pretty quick

Id ignore anything european over here - seeing what prices even tradys have to pay for parts for anything european is bloody horrible , same goes for subaru's ..

Admittedly a late STI Impreza wagon would be a good piece of kit if it hasnt been thrashed within an inch of its life by previous owners or modified with 3 billion poinds of unwanted unnecessary crap that people put on these cars to make them " choice bro "

the last of the N spec Caldina Gt4's are very nice - quirly on the looks dept , but its growing on me , Id be happy with one in the garage , but i believe they only come in auto??

Evo's seem to be a pretty rounded choice - engines are straightforward and common , they make good power , make bad drivers look good , and theres always parts available for them in aftermarket and second hand places .. Not a hatch , but tey seem to be roomy enough for 4

I own an St205 Group A ( NZ new number 1 ). Its fast , Looks pretty good against the current mob of 4wd boxes competing in WRC , though not as good as a St185 group A - has lots of front room for the passengers but its a car you wont have friends with. Its strong , bar the superstrut front end that has its niggly annoying issues with parts availability , Is built like a brick shithouse , the gearbox and drivetrain is bulletproof , but it comes at a price of never being able to source stuff easily ..

The drivetrains not that dissimilar to a caldina - though the 205 is obviously alot stronger , so yeah - my choice would be a STI wagon, or a caldina - if an AWD turbo wagon is what you want ..
