Steering arm angle

Postby AE86less » Thu Jun 12, 2008 8:32 pm

I'm posting this here because no one seems to answer questions that I post in my project thread  . Just because my progress is sloow and boring doesn't mean you don't have to read it!

/rant

So I bolted up all the gear onto my Celica front struts (gear being: ST171 corona hub and AE82 tophat), I was putting it together and onto the car to check that everything did actually fit etc. I suddenly found that the steering arm fitting (can't remember the name right now  ) wouldn't go into the hole on the hub because it tapered the wrong way! I ummed and ahhed about that for while, wondering if I had perhaps put the wrong hub on the strut or something dumb like that. Unfortunately no, the corona hub simply accepts the fitting from the bottom. So I twisted/rotated the arm up the other way and put it in.

The first two things I noticed were:

1: I have teh mad toe out (I hope there is enough adjustment in the shaft)

2: The steering arm comes out of the rack on quite an angle, I'm worried about how safe it is. (I'll get some photos tomorow if needed)

Basically, should I be worrying?

Sorry bout the mean long story, I'm at work and we JUST got internet here and it's really exciting/i'm really bored

YES you should be worried.
It could cause binding with more steering ingle and will amost certainly cause bump steer which isn't much fun.

:?

Maybe corona hubs aren't so brilliant after all..

I'll get some pics up tomorow anyway.

I wonder if it's possible to flip that tapered hole over?

I'd be worried about it bending/breaking steering components under spring compression situations

or if the bosses are the same you could just use the boss from your 4x100 hubs

Whats involved to change the rears to 5 stud?

A short term reason for staying 4 stud is that I have a whole stack of 4x100 steelies etc that are perfect for skidding on and unless they go with my MR2 I have a set of very nice TOM'S mags.

At the moment I have a few options that I can see:

1: Try and find a way to reverse the taper in the corona hub

2: Use Corolla hub with a custom halfshaft

3: Use Celica hub (which has huge brakes compared to the other 2) and convert the rear to 5 stud (what's the cost here?)

At this stage I am not sure if the celica halfshafts need to be shortened, if they do then having them mated to the corolla shafts might be the easiest.

Any suggestions from the wise Toyspeed populace?

Also a good idea!

Make that option 4 (assuming they're the same).

i'm not actually sure

but if i where you i would go for the 5x100 conversion so you get the bigger brakes if that means the shafts sorted

i know that the corona gtr hubs are the cure for the steering arm angle when doing a 5 stud conversion to a st171 corona for the celica twinpots

The celica hubs would certainly resolve the issue of the tie rod angle (remembered the proper name :D )

What would I actually need to do to convert the rear hubs to 5 stud though? I guess I could get celica/gtr corona rear hubs or something?

EDIT: Or spacers?

Just had a look at a couple of cars in the carpark at uni today, doesn't look like there are any 5 stud rear hubs that'll bolt up easily.

Anywho, here a picture of the problem:

I jacked the strut up and watched the wheel turn

So I'm going to go and get a quote to get the celica hub changed to 4x100. Any recommended places on the Shore or greater Auckland?

The trouble is that the steering rack is too high, in order to have the taper from the bottom the rack in the corona must be quite significantly lower. Longer tie rods would solve the extra toe out, but not the bump steer I don't think.

yep I see your point, other option would be getting the hub carrier (if thats what its called) that takes the tie rod end, machined to suit it coming from the top rather than bottom. That I guess would solve sme issues but then may still have the angle ponting in I guess, just not from the bottom.

Are you sure you can't get them in from the top at all?

you wouldnt have to convert rear to 5 stud though. use mismatched wheels (drift styles y0) or talk to wheel place about buying 2 pairs of same wheel with diff stud pattern.

I would guess that you will have massive roll/bump steer problems with the setup you describe

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

I thought about that, but I don't really want to be drawing heaps of attention to the car with mismatched wheels. I had a talk to Nick at magwarehouse NS and he reckons that F*ck all wheels come in a 15" with 4 and 5 stud patterns.

But I found some!

15x7 in 5x100 and 4x100! Stoked, now I just need to find someone who deals in Rota wheels.
