Removing/disabling aircron, 20V

Postby RS13 » Sat Jun 21, 2008 4:30 pm

As per title,

Friend of mine just bought an AE101 with squeaky aircon pump, system isn't charged anyway and she'd rather just remove it rather than get it repaired or replaced with a second hand pump.

As its' on the same belt as the powersteer pump, what are the options? Am I able to modify the existing brackets/pulley or perhaps remove the clutch from the pump itself?

What have others done?

Whats the pulley setup like? could you remove the pump and use a shorter belt?

if there are ae101's out there with p/s but no a/c then you should be able to pick up a bracket from one and use that

i cant imagine why anyone would want to remove aircon from their car unless it was a dedicated race car...

Its' not a "want", its' a "need", and she needs to because it would cost almost half of what she paid for the whole car to repair/replace it, and its' making an embarrassing amount of noise.

ChaosAD: I wasn't aware that there were 20V 101s' without aircon?

Excuse the rough drawing..

The tensioner pulley runs on the smooth side of the belt, so I can't run a smaller belt around it up to the PS pulley without having a raised shoulder on the tensioner pulley, I'd imagine it would just walk itself off?

Surely someone else must have come across this before? Ideally, I'd hoped there was a grooved pulley I could use from another engine, with a smaller belt?

the size of the pulley doesnt matter too much, go to pocket a part and have a look. bound to find something you can use.

We don't have a pick-a-part down here, and wreckers' yards don't take too kindly to having people wandering around their yards, which is why I hoped someone here had done it before so that I know what parts I need.

F**kn champion, why I didn't see those when I searched escapes me, cheers fulla! Although, I may have found a grooved pulley that may be able to be used as a tensioner.

i used a 5pk 890 and used washers (one per stud) to space the brackets out from the block, was the only way i could do it, without making a tensioner swivel for the p/s pump

on my racecar i just got some string, and used it to measure the new belt size, and use the PS as the tensioner.
cant recall the belt size off the top of my head but im sure ive posted it before (will have a look at home and see, ive got it in my book)
you need to use a crow bar on the PS pump, then tighten the bolt. its a very tight fit and a prick to do (eh Jeremy, remember the mission at Manfeild after we hit the cone and flicked off the belt :P )

I just used a big fcuk off set of sockets to do the tensioners on my air upmp, which is on the same belt as the AC. Maybe a crow bar wouldv'e made it easier :P I thought about disabling my AC...but i Live in Aussie ffs
