4AGE Alternator interchange....

Postby jondee86 » Sun Jun 22, 2008 12:19 pm

Since I am looking for an alternator to replace the fooked one
on my AE86, can anyone say if the later model alternators will
interchange ??

I'm using the original AE86 alternator (built-in regulator and
round 3-pin plug); can I use the alternator from :

1. Any bigport 4AGE ?
2. Smallport 4AGE ??
3. AE101 4AGE ??
4. Other lesser Toyota models (need a 5 groove pulley) ??

Cheers... jondee86

i used a 20v alternator for my ae86 engine.
main two things that differ between them are the offset of the mounts, and the shape of the plug on the back - there are 3 different kinds of plugs.

thats weird, i put an alternator off a bigport 4age onto a silvertop, the one i took off was exactly the same, same plug same number etc.

OK... that sounds hopeful.

I'll take my one down to the local Toyota wrecker and see what I can
match up from his parts bin. And if anyone in Wellington/Hutt/Porirua
has a low(ish) kms alternator going cheep  give me a yell. I'll
make a flypast at Picka as well... never know your luck :)

If you wanted to send me your old one I can repair and overhaul it if you want.

PM me for a price if interested.

so did i, they were exactly the same. i probably wasn't very clear before, the differences I referred to was between all 4age alternators - not the bluetop and 20v alternator i used.

Thanks Matt, but the outer slip ring has a pretty deep groove in it,
so maybe not worth repairing ? Anyways, I grabbed an alternator
off some random FWD 2 litre Toyota at Picka that is identical outside,
except for the position of the plug and 12V out terminal.

When I took a look inside, I found that it only has 6 diodes. It seems
like the star point is brought out, but does not have anything connected
to it. Everything else looks fine, and the diodes test up OK. So.... is
there any problem in using a 6-diode rectifier holder instead of an
8-diode one ??

Other than that, I'll need to swap the pulleys over, but that doesn't look
too hard :)

Unusual as most are the 8 diode.

The 6 diode one will have less output at lower revs by quite a bit,
but will still work ok.

What do you mean by using a 6-diode rectifier holder?

If the main stud comes out in a different position the whole rear housing may be different and may not accept your old 8 diode rectifier.

Not trying to mix and match... just checking that using the whole
6-diode alternator isn't going to cause a prob when I plug it in. I'll
give it a run, and see what happens....

It has a slightly smaller diameter pulley than the original alternator.
I figured that was just because the engine I pulled it from didn't
redline as high as a 4AGE, and therefore the smaller pulley allowed
it to run at the same optimum speed.

But maybe it was to spin it a bit faster than the 4AGE one to produce
a few more watts ? Anyway, I'm going to change the pulleys over if
I can get them off without a fight :D

If you just bolt it on it will work fine.

as long as the wiring will reach.

Yup... in and running :) The plugs are underneath now, in a
kind of awkward place, but the wires reached OK. Charging at
13.8V on my budget meter, so all good.

Only issue is that I didn't change the pulleys, and now I am right
on the end of the adjustment with the stock belt. I'll probably leave
it until I need a belt, and get one size down.
