Seccond hand suspension

Postby bbq1988 » Mon Jun 23, 2008 11:57 am

Hey guys, whats your thoughts on seccond hand suspension? i have found a set of TEIN adjustables for my car for a sharp price, they came out of another caldina that had done around 100,000kms (i dont think the shocks have but cant be sure)

yes or no?

Cheers

depends on price, and also the true age/condition/kms
just cause the car has done 100,000kms, doesnt mean that the shocks have, they could have been in quite a few different cars even!

Tein should be rebuildable however
also the spring rates need to be taken into consideration - too hard and the car will bounce/bumpsteer, too soft and well it will be more of a boaty whale!

but honestly is there much point in putting adjustables in a caldina?
i find mine with low tein springs to be a good height as well as good firmness. i had some lower springs in it prior to the teins, but i bottomed out on way way too many things.

plus obviously you will need a cert

i replaced my shocks with standard ones when i put the tein springs in, that was about 50,000kms ago, when the car had done ~120,000 from memory.
retail per genuine shock is only $150 ($600 per set RETAIL - talk to our supplier ;) )
they will last another 100,000kms AT LEAST
to buy adjustables, cert them, then rebuild them sooner or later will be more spendy i imagine, but hey, each to their own

depends if you NEED adjustables?

if not, i'd just get some nice new KYBs and some lowering springs of some flavour (i'm sure theres many on here with an opinion of springs) Even custom (Cobra) springs would be a good choice.

if they need rebuilding, then you will spend the above amount of money on the rebuild + cost of initial buy of coilovers + cert cost.... hmmm

EDIT: beaten to the point :P

There's nothing necessarily wrong with 2nd hand suspension as long as you know what you're getting.
Many very successful race & rally cars are running on suspension components either imported 2nd hand or bought used locally.
Most after market set ups will take an insert so all is not lost if one shock is soft or leaky.

I'm with the others on the adjustables. If you don't need them, why have them? And who really needs them anyway?

Consider also why they were removed from the other Caldina. Were they too hard? Some Japanese companies only make adjustables for circuit use and Tein, in particular, were renowned as being far too stiff for road use.
Far better to have the right shock with the right height paltform and the right spring for your application.

I need some softer springs for my Tein adjustables in my FXGT racecar, they are shockingly hard and drive like arse on the road

I'd check them out thoroughly first... check for leaks, also remove the springs if you can and see how the damping is on them... also it depends on how cheap we're talking as to whether a rebuild on them will be a viable option. Teins are most definitely rebuildable in NZ though (Autolign are the agents from memory).

If you're satisifed that they're not leaking, bent and are damping as they should then I don't see a reason why not to go for it if you're happy sacrificing ride quality a bit. Worth it in the pursuit of slammage though I reckon!

Example: S/TB Forester that is like driving around in a bouncy castle.
Bought 2nd hand Zero sports, maybe 50k kms, for 450. My opinion is just over 100 a corner = worth it.

Yep Autolign rebuild TEIN

as for them being too stiff..... depends on the type kit...
being in a caldina they are quite likely not too stiff as the wagon series are made with comfort in mind. Kits such as superwagon and superstreet are adjustable for levels starting softer than stock. That doesnt mean that some clown hasnt put 18kg springs in them tho!

Santa, a suspension system that is awesome on the track, will be crap on the road! and vice versa!

Unless they are in very good conditon and you can have some gaurantee of milage, i wouldnt pay any more than a few hundy for them as if they need rebuilding your probably looking at $200 each for that.

We've got Tein height and damper adjustables in our '98 GTT.
Came with the car so not sure what the GTT's are like standard.
The car handles very well - altho the springs are a bit stiff. It'd be nice sometimes to soften them a little. The damper control's are great - altho - we had issues with the top hats corroding. No idea what happened. They looked like they were a sacrificial annode. These were about $700 for a pair - OUCH.

But yeah - tein's are a nice performance shock/spring setup.

Was wondering more about what second hand TRD Shocks and springs are worth, notably for the 20X series Curren & Celica... I have a set I'm considering selling, I figure this thread is as good a place as any to ask! lol
