Give way rules, let see what you think :)

The question is very simple: who has to give way?
note: the intersection is unmarked.

well it seems to me people get these opinions. God damn it, it is too $&#$% easy to get a licence in NZ.

The end of my street used to be like that. 90% of people wouldn't give way when you were pulling out. The majority of people was so big you basically had to do the same otherwise people thought YOU were the bad driver.

Legally you have to give way but nobody in this country does, so I just join them or else road rage ensures.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Round where I live almost all of these situations involve the blue car being on a give way sign. So....somewhat immaterial

Edit: Heh and almost all of us have gotten it right, so much for car enthusiasts being a danger ;)

This is one of those rules that really pisses me off how no one seems to pay notice to it. If they decide to ignore it and go, I will quite often just jump a few meters forard to give them a fright and flick the bird at them. It is probably the only situation where I get close to getting road rage, perhaps because like someone else said, it is at the end of my street, so it happens on a daily basis.

lol...I almost failed my licence test on this sernario (that was 11 years ago). The big problem is that no one points it out to you that you need to look to see if the said "blue" car is at a give way sign or not. (and I even had driving lessons to reduce my wait time to upgrade my licence) And the old fart "teaching" me to drive, never once said about that!
How are people meant to become safe drivers if even the teachers dont know that rule?? People take for granted that if you are at an intersection and your turning...that you are on a give way sign.

From that day onwards, I learnt too look at the intersection when coming up to it and ive never forgotten since!!!

But yea, your right, bugger all people out there either know about it, or do it!

nah I wrote a little bit of an explanation and then thought it kinda defeats the purpose of the test.

But yeah gotta be careful on sergei's thread! (jokes...but really)

Theres one up the road from me, and I'd say maybe 1 in 10 people are clued on to it. I just let them go, just cause I don't want my car wasted. Thing is they don't even know that they are wrong!
We need to waste some more tax payers money and launch another ad campaign.

Exactly right! I had this argument as I started to move (obviously looking at the drivers face) and she was frightened when she realised I was there.
She was so sure of her self that she pulled over, so I turned around and tried to explain where she was wrong. She would not listen and kept yelling that she was driving for 12 years and knows better.

hence I started this thread to see how many people are not aware of this.

This time I will be taking road code book with me and book mark on right page as I use that intersection every day and the amount of idiots is shocking.

For those who have no clue here is the answer:
http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/roadcode/about-driving/giving-way-at-uncontrolled-intersections.html

Helpful hint

At an uncontrolled intersection, if you are turning, give way to all vehicles not turning. In all other situations, give way to vehicles crossing or coming from your right.

I believe that there is no sense in this rule. I would only ever go first if the red car stops and wave for me to go through.

Really, is it that hard to just imagine a roundabout at each intersection? I think if people did this, there'd be far less crashes!

Also might be good to point out that if the blue car is coming out of lets say a supermarket driveway with no give way sign, the same rule applies

The amount of times I've seen this at Khandallah New World, I know why all the soccer mums drive 4wd's, because they think they have right of way cos their car is bigger.

http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/roadcode/about-driving/the-give-way-rules.html

In case anyone disagrees with me:

What is an intersection?

An intersection is where:

* two or more streets or roads join or cross
* a public entrance or exit joins a street or road.

Intersections include entrances and exits to and from supermarkets, petrol stations and other public parking areas such as airports and hospitals.

Not really as no-one seems to be able to drive or indicate properly on round abouts either.
Most intersections do have a give way sign so this is not a problem I have to deal with often. The big one I reckon is people who can't stay in the correct lane when turning onto a multi-lane road.
