Bought a new car.

Postby GDII » Wed Jun 25, 2008 8:11 pm

Bought myself a 1990 MR2 G-Limited.

Has later model wheels and an after market front lip. Which I'm not 100% sure of as it could just be of a later model SW20. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Haven't driven it much but it's a lot of fun so far.
Has a rebuilt engine. The car is stock standard apart from the wheels and front lip. And I think the wing on the back was never there when it came from the factory.
Plan on doing a few upgrades on it but leaving the engine standard apart from maybe a good replacement panel filter.

Get some better tires as the back ones have flat spots on them and its a bit bumpy to drive. Get better brake pads and slotted and dimpled front rotors.

Nice MR2. Is it manual?
That front lip is indeed aftermarket.

You think its aftermarket? From those pics it looks to me a gen 2+ lip thats been painted.

That's what I thought at first but if you look at the top pic it looks as if it has small vents on either side or at least a recess. Photo isn't very clear though.

It's manual. I'd never buy an auto.

The lip and front bumper was yellow so yea, it has been painted. It surprised me that its all metal and not plastic. Not knowing heaps about SW20s

So when it is going to be rally spec?

When I get some 14" wheels and gravel tires. And all the necessities for hillclimbs. Like helmet and racing clothes and a fire extinguisher.

What are peoples experiences of SW20s on gravel?

Will be good for tarmac hillclimbs though.

Probably start off doing autocrosses to learn how the car behaves and improve my overall driving skills.

Better than driving in the wet with crappy tires. You can actually feel when its about to let go :)

I have very little experience with cars on gravel in general- but I had a few fun gravel blasts when I owned my SW. IMO it did very well and it seemed to handle better on gravel than on tarmac   probably due to the horrendously soft/f u c k e d suspension/shocks that came with it.

Nice looking car.

Aftermarket front lip and stock rear spoiler btw. And yes some SW's came without a wing...........im unsure as to if it was NZnew or just some NA's or what.

I know its its a stock rear spoiler. But the aerial for the radio is in the body of the car and comes up through the spoiler.
The previous owner before the guy I bought it off was using it as a project car so it has been done up a little bit.
The spoiler is a lot more faded than the rest of the car which makes me think it was off another car, along with the aerial thing.

Was searching the net last night and couldn't find any front lips on standard SW20s that looked like mine. So it must be after market.

The car makes a horrible tinny buzzing noise from the exhaust which I dislike a lot. You can only hear it from outside the car.
What causes it and how can it be so called, fixed?

Could it be a loose exhaust shroud?

True.

I haven't seen one like that before.

My spoilers faded a heap more than the rest of the car, its just the shitty paint.

I had the annoying metallic buzz coming from my exhaust too, thought it was a buggered muffler to start with, ended up being a loose bracket on the downpipe where it connects to the block.

Lip is def after market, i'm yet to see any sw20 that didn't come with a spoiler, must be hens teeth if out there. I have some factory 14's with decent front tyres for cheapish if required. Go take it out on a grass paddock, get it into some power slides and try correct them, good way to learn the cars limits, and see what it does if you $&#$% it up.

An LSD box would be good but atm I think I'll be ok.

pyro_sniper2002 wrote:I have some factory 14's with decent front tyres for cheapish if required.

They would be good. Will put gravel tires on them so the road tires are no use to me.

I'll have to have a good look at the aerial hole. The black surround might have come off the spoiler for all I know. At least I have a spoiler. Would look stupid without one.

I used to have access to a paddock but its now covered in houses. Might have abit of trouble trying to drift round the houses

Got some new Direzza DZ01s for the back today. 205/50/15. They look a little small and stretched on the 7" wheels. But thats what it had when I got the car. But they are alot better than the GT radials it had before.

The t-top leaks really bad. Has anyone fixed this problem? Stupid Dunedin weather.
I reckon the rubber seal is designed badly above the doors where the tops lock into the car.
