silvertop afm

Postby RS13 » Sat Jun 28, 2008 8:38 pm

My mates' 20V is doing 300-350km to a tank, silvertop with pod filter and larger exhaust from the flexi back, when looking around she should be getting at least 450-500km? She nannas' it around, the lack of economy certainly isn't driving style, are there any obvious faults I should be looking for?

The only thing that bothers me is that on the afm, the "adjusting" screw is covered in tool marks, so I'd assume that would have been played with.. what exactly does that do? And when she shuts the car off, the afm makes a "slap" sort of noise, like the flap slamming closed.. is this normal? She has also mentioned that sometimes when she depresses the accelerator to move off, the car hesitates for a second before revving up.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks. :)

For the slapping sound when the car is turned off, that's normal. My sister's car does that.

Her car used to jerk when taking off like you mention. I fixed it by using some carburettor and throttle body cleaner. I used it on my BZ-G as well. Works a treat.

Does the pod filter have a decent cold air feed. It's often better to stick with the stock air box and go for a panel filter, like a K&N jobbie..

The screw on the AFM is for idle mixture only,

Replace the oxygen sensor if you want better economy.

Whats the price on those? I remember awhile back you saying you could get them for a fair bit cheaper than genuine ones
Ending up with spare parts in assembling things since 1983

I probably still can. They are a 4 wire sensor aren't they?

Will check price on Monday if I remember.

What gas are you running? Do you use an octane booster?

As O2 sensors don't like leaded fuel ( avgas ) or octane boosters.

The one's I get are NGK aftermarket 4 wire ones.

Would also check all the ignition parts are in good condition as this could cause the new Oxy sensor to give up.

Sometimes the silvertop ecu's develop a problem and the car won't run properly - some capacitors leak or burn out. Search for a fix, it has been covered on here before.

Ewan (10k20v) put a silvertop trueno on his work dyno for a customer a month ago... customer complained of poor fuel economy.
...65kw at the wheels.
He reset the timing, cleaned the AFM, 75kw
He then "clicked the AFM to get the air/fuel ratio back to where it should have been, 85kw and a much happier customer.
Note - the kw are exactly what he got but are a fair representation from what I remember (with my poor old memory)
Note - don't stuff around with your afm unless you have the knowledge and tools to measure air/fuel ratios.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
