Theres also another problem, if you dont have full insurance yourself you maybe waiting a while for a payout. My primera was written off, im not at fault. Yet my premiums have gone up at the moment cos until the insurance gets it in writing from the police, its considered my fault. Its been 2 weeks and im just about to get paid out, from my insurance company. Id probably be waiting much longer for the other partys insurance.

So really, im going more against it. The only reason im for it now is that i think other people need to take more responsibility for themselves. The fact they dont have insurance wont affect me, cos im always fully insured. My insurance company can deal to them instead of me chasing for money on uninsured drivers.

So you'd rather pay a higher premium in the first place so that those loosers can get insurance?

As if everyone has to have insurance, there are some people who are so reckless and bad at driving that they will cost the insurers so much that premiuims will have to rise across the board to cover it,

and if they just raise those people premiums, what are they going to do?
If they cant afford to pay the super high premium then I doubt they will just not own/drive a car. they will just drive around uninsured anyway,
so you will be no better off,

Yes, I would rather pay an extra $50 a year for my premiums if it means that someone who hits me is covered to pay the damage.

I dont think premiums are going to go up outrageously.
And they should be based on the individuals driving history anyway.

Just a few things to think on

In theory, if compulsory third party comes in, would it then invalidate the need for comprehensive coverage other than speciality policies??

Would there be exclusion clauses in the compulsory scheme??

Who values the vehicle?? Those will classic/modified cars will probably still need comprehensive agreed value policies anyway which would inherently cost more as the companies don't really want your business now

If a car is written off, will you retain ownership or even get a choice of keeping it or does the government (or underwritten agency) get it and auction it off??

Police will have to attend pretty much everything, unless someone signs a declaration of fault or it will turn into the usual he said she said at claim times, and through normal channels it's bad enough, imagine that run by a government department......

Will you get to choose your repairer?? or will it be done by shops on an "approved" list who will do it as cheaply as possible.

Good point,

A friend of mine had his DX corolla run into the back of a year or so ago,

It dented the back bumper but that was about all,

They wrote of the car and gave him a cheque for what they valued it at,
$500, and he had no choice and did not get the car back.

whyd he claim it if just the bumper was dented?
or did he have to cause it was reported etc?

That sounds odd. When we have ever claimed on insurance, we have asked for replacement, because the wording in our policy was value of or replacement. We insist on replacement.

Thats crap.
If they claim on their own policy and they are at fault their own insurance company stumps up for the cash to repair their own car.

Additionally they have the onus to repair or replace the other vehicle depending on its insured or assessed value (whichever is lower) - if the car is underinsured then its their fault - but no way theyre going to write a car off without any negotiation involved.

When I smacked up my st183 it was 50/50 writeoff - so i asked for repair and i got it...
