power steering delete.

Postby barryogen » Tue Jul 08, 2008 5:08 pm

I've been reading about people removing power steering by just pulling the pump, and linking the two pipes making it into a closed loop...

I assume that this would make it lighter than not having power steering on, as in engine off, but car running, but heavier than when car is running clearly.

Any real downside to it?

I remeber reading that it is not good for a powersteer rack to be left like that (i think it was a REV magazine article when they converted their Altezza to manual steer)

We have done this before on rally cars. There didn't appear to be any real issues other than it being a little heavier.
These days we run with the power steering.

sorry, don't get me wrong, I'm not really looking at this myself, just wondered about it.

The Honda boys seem to do it alot, I figured that there would be more info on potential downsides, but couldn't find any other than being a bit heavier.

I found that power steering is necessary. With a decent LSD the car is dangerous without it. (I used the proper manual rack when I did it, and in a front drive)

If making it a closed loop make sure the fluid is drained, otherwise it will give strange feedback. If it is drained it will probably kill the seals over time.

You need to man up a bit pc. Most FWD rally cars pre the mid 90's wouldn't have had power steering.
Yes, I've had the odd dislocated thumb if I had it in the wrong place during take off but there's no way I'd describe such a car as dangerous.

Yeah , ive heard of them doing that also. My mate with a turbo teg (DSCRT) disabled his power steering, without removing it completely. It made spinning all the way up through the gears till the top of 4th all that much more fun on the motorway ;)

The car wasn't so much dangerous with me driving it, but there is no way I would let someone else drive it like that on the road, if they used a little too much gas going round a 90 degree on the road the car would likely shoot into the other lane before the hands/arms caught up. Compared to your average front drive car, it was very difficult to control.
