Does anyone know of any good places around Auckland to get custom length fwd driveshafts made up?

I went to a place on Sunnybrae Rd in Glenfield who said that it would either be very cheap to get them made if they car find two appropriate parts with the right lengths or very expensive if they have to machine the parts themselves.

The very cheap sounded good at $70ish per side (iirc) or $400 per side if nothing could be found.

For anyone who doesn't know (and if it's relevant) I need shorter shafts for the 3SGE in my corolla.

I'm really just looking for a second opinion on what this other place said.

Apparently Metpresco Engineering on Archers Road can do them (so I was told by the son of the owner)

Also, there's a place called Precision Gears in East Tamaki which I believe does that kind of thing, too.

I assume you went to ADL? AFAIK they outsource to Heat Treatments for custom shafts and are quite expensive.

When I went to ADL (Yeah, you're right, I just forgot the name :oops:

) the guy I was talking to was explaining how it could work and I accidentally kind of zoned out at the wrong moment looking at something on the shelves behind him

I got my custom ones done by Jeffrey Bruce at precision engineering.
Havent been able to break them yet

Made from some metal that has good memory so it can twist alot and not break.

Cant remember full price but was around $400 for the pair.

He wanted $350 +GST per side!

am i right in thinking that all you need done is the main axle shaft shortened and then resplined at the end that gets shortend?

if so anyone that does axles should be able to do them.

Who does axles though?

I don't even need it resplined.

To be honest I'm pretty confused, I've been told a lot of different things about what I need.

AE86less, you need to start at the beginning.
What model 3SGE? What gearbox & driveshafts & outer CVs? What bottom arms/hubs?
Have you worked out how much you need off?

There are a number of differing length axles throughout the Celica range and you may well be able to find the solution to at least one side with out getting a custom made.
This is how it panned out with our conversion.

Some engineers will cut & weld & sleeve your existing axle. We had one done as a spare but installed it in the car instead. Broke it on the startline after 3 runs up it's 1st hillclimb.

Ok.

The entire drive train is from an ST202 Celica - 3rd gen 3SGE and S54 box. Also from the same car come the axles I'm trying to use and the front hubs.

I just went out and measured and the passenger side shaft needs shortening by approximately 50mm and the drivers side by about 10mm (/may actually fit, I've only tried the passenger side now that I think of it :oops:

)

Same as ours. So you didn't centre it when you installed it. Have you hung the gearbox off the standard mount?

Why don't you use Corolla/Levin axles?

Sergei: Because the lengths required are different to the Corolla shafts I have and the gearbox outputs (proper term?) are different also.

TRD Man: No, it is well to the drivers side. We modified the standard C52 mount and hung it off that as far to the right as the mount would allow.

You could try ST16X shafts, as it is narrower than ST20X, in fact it is very similar to corolla width

Don't suppose anyone has a pair lying round I could try? I don't really want to buy them then find they don't fit like the Corona hubs I bought :lol:

On our install we ran lengthened ST182 bottom arms to give us the ST202 track. We needed to shorten one driveshaft (the passenger side) by 20mm and lengthen the other by 20mm.
We found the drivers side from ST182 gave us the shorter one we needed for our passenger side.
We had to get the other custom made.
It is quite possible that a ST162 or a Corolla shaft will give you the 40mm shorter item you need.

I can't find the specs anywhere and I don't have anything to play with so I'll head into ADL/Toyota and find out the lengths/ask what they recommend.
