I imagine it's compared to a "standard" Surf, the fact there's been an engine change is your(or in this case, your mates) problem.

It goes back to engine - eg. the vehicle it came out of, so a Soarer etc.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/4600794a11.html Just found this one on stuff today, hope every one is ok car wise!

So what I can I do to reduce my chances of getting fined and or stickered?

I do not know for sure that my exhaust is legal (but will have it checked at the next warrant), but twice now cops have had a bloody good go at me (including trying to give me a ticket for 65 without proof in a 50 zone when I was going less than 50), and so far nothing has been said about my exhaust, but I think that was all before the law change.

So what kind of certification, letter, sticker blah blah blah what ever else do I need to prevent or help prevent a cop fining or stickering me with a legal exhaust?

Check with your local testing station but you can have a test done which will provided your car is under the allowable dB rating, give you a certificate which states specs of exhaust (sizing, muffler location and size etc) meaning you can prove to police wof inspectors etc that it is legal.

"The recent law change has meant that operating a vehicle in a noisy manner now carries 25 demerit points, and a reduced fine from $250 to $50."

hmmm i wonder who gets to decide if you were either operating a vehicle in a noisy manner or just had a noisy car?

In the process of sticking a metal plate thing in my exhaust, thought I'd fire her up with the open downpipe, should take it in for a test like that for shits and giggles  show them what a noisy mr2 really sounds like

Brother in-laws commodore only revs to 5000rpm so all its power is down low where-as my corolla makes peek power at 7800rpm and has 0 power or torque under 4000rpm  so i cant rev my car very far without disapproving looks which means i have have to drive quietly and slowley

Wow, sign of things to come....I just took the new rolla down to get it a WOF and the guy failed it on the exhaust!!

Below is a pick of the exhaust...now at a rough guess its a 2 & 1/4" muff with a silencer in it. At idle, its quiet, IE. you cant hear it at all...and the winner at the wof place failed it as it was "louder than standard exhausts"

*sigh*

Was the winner right?
Is it louder than a standard corolla?

This law makes me so mad. Of course it's louder than standard because its not standard.

Not standard doesn't mean it's automatically louder.

And louder doesn't mean it will perform better either.

And yes I know that you know that, but it still appears to be a common thought by a lot of people.

Mines not standard(Altezza RS200 with Headers and TRD muffler) but appears to be quieter than stock except at ~6000+RPM, so outside of their testing area.

Yea, It is louder....but im guessing by 10db....it would be lucky to be even near 75db in total. (I can fart louder  )
So it comes down to what the start of this thread was all about...its up to the wof testers "personal" thoughts on the exhaust.
They need to make one law, that all follow, and not leave things open to interpretation.

I stopped off at midas on the way home, and he has a Db tester there (so he said) and that he would pass exhausts that are louder than what mine was.

75db is fairly quiet!

Had Corolla in for warrent last week at work, they took it around to local certifier and tested it. its running its stock BT 20v headers and collector, then 60mm piping all the way back with two resonators and a magna/turbo flow stlye rear muffler only came up as 88db on his hand held tester at 3500rpm but when he lifted off the throttle it spiked to 92db

Sorry for my ignorance but, how do they test it? Bring the revs up slowly to 3,500 and hold it there or floor it till 3,500rpm and get peak reading?

He is in the wrong.

The exhaust system may be noisier than the original one provided that:

the noise output either remains well below the legal noise limits, or
an Objective Noise Test proves that the exhaust system does not exceed the legal noise limits.

http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/vehicl ... hicle.html

Virm very abridged
VIRM 11-1 reasons for rejection
6) The exhaust noise output is not less than or similar to original exhaust system
AND my emphasis
1) the increased noise output exceeds the relevant noise limit

So, being noiser isn't enough. Must be noisier than standard AND be noisier than threshold (so 92dba quick test).

If you were failed warrant on exact wording you have given us, the guy isn't correct and needs to read his virm with his eyes in the open position.

i love this:

The WoF inspector uses his/her experience to assess the noise output of the vehicle compared to other identical or similar vehicles in original and good condition.

how the F''' are they going to find a 1986 GT Supra in stock but good condition lmao
