4agze recondition

Postby AE82 FXGT » Sat Aug 02, 2008 6:31 pm

Hey all,

I just cracked open my gze, and noticed some stuff which I thought I'd get some thoughts on.

First, the intake valves have white crusty stuff on them, what's up with that?
I'm taking the whole head to an engine rebuilder to get it skimmed/ crack tested (along with the pistons, rods and crank)etc

Image

Next is the block, now the motor had an overheating issue. I notice that what I think is supposed to be a water jacket is completely blocked off by a metallic substance. I've got the pistons out and rings/ringlands are intact, and pistons have some carbon build up on them.

You can see what I'm talking about here, on the righthand side just above the dowel.

Thoughts/insight appreciated

firstly they look like the exhaust valves have the white crusty stuff.
Thats pretty normal for an old engine.

Yeah motor has approx 210xxxkms on it so that alright then.

Can anyone help out with the water jacket Q?
I google image search but can't find a good pic.

(my bad re: mixing up inlet and exhaust valve, was in a hurry to get the message out.)

that is the headgaskit i think but dont think that would cause overheating, maybe waterpump thermostat etc

Yeah thats the head gasket sitting on the block, didn't think to look at my new gasket, will check that. Already had a new waterpump and thermostat in it while it was running, but only fixed the problem temporary (was fine for like a couple months and good few runs over the rimutakas, then it got hot climbing them again).

Hence the rip it out and strip it down attitude I got.

I guess I'll try and clean out the water jackets real good, and get the head cleaned up.

take the block along to the engine rebuilder as well, they can clean them pretty well - acid dip etc. though if you arent careful you will get talked into a lot more besides :P

Yeah will do.

What sort of things should I get them to look at, while still keepiing the build rather budget?

I'm not looking for loads of power, just a back to factory would be nice. (It is going to get a 12psi pulley, bluetop cams and its got an exhaust)

Was thinking of getting the block and head cleaned, bores measured and checked, pistons, crank, and rods crack tested etc..

if you are doing a bottom end rebuild i would think at a minimum you would want the bores honed and the crank journals polished.

Hey,

still getting thecrank out at the moment, (stupid gear for the cambelt is giving me grief)

BUT

I've been offered another already machined 4agze from an aw11.

Questions:

1)being a bigport head the head in no good to me right?
2)It's not going to be as high compression as my pistons, will I notice the difference? (It'll be running a pulley kit)
3)How much should I offer for the short block? (pistons, rods, crank etc)
4)Is there anything I could be overlooking?

unless the block is a real bargain when the work done is taken into account, i'd be tempted to stick with what you have. the compression will definitely make a difference.

before you go buying something that has been 'machined' i'd be wanting a detailed breakdown of what work has been done on an invoice from a reputable engine rebuilder.

i recently had a very basic freshen up done to a low kms smallport im building, was bores honed, everything cleaned, crank polished, seal lip removed, and block / head surfaced. paid $450 cash, at a place we send a lot of work to. the retail value was close to 700 apparently. so it adds up pretty fast, just to give you some idea.

yeah, compression is the main thing I'm worried about.

If I was to turbo then I'd buy it and wind up the boost a bit, but I'm not, so I'm not so sure...

8.9 compression pistons still better for 20psi

Ok so the engine is fully apart, taking to the rebuilders tomorrow hopefully.

I'm getting:

-bores honed
-head and block skimmed
-clearances for rings and bearings checked
-head and block cleaned
-head, block, rods, and crank crack tested
-valvegrind
-valvestem seals replaced
-crank polished/grind + oversized bearings

I found one of the main bearings looks a bit scratched, will probably need new main bearings, I have flicked a few mails off and looked up some ACL's, will purchase once I find out if I need oversized or not.
