Isn't this based on a 95DB drive by test? If so that's quite loud! IMO its good that they state a set limit, before it was just a "significantly Louder" than factory clause wasn't it?

Why the hell are motorcycles still allowed to be more than twice as loud as cars?

because 99% of 'boyracers' are all talk when it comes to physically standing up for themselves, mr policeman will tend to be a bit too scared to tell 'insert bikey gang member here' that his harley with no indicators etc is to noisy.

Can't argue with this at all, and its not surprising either.

Personally I think its good people are trying to do something about it.

There are just far too many basic a to b cars around with lousy cannon mufflers just thrown on any old angle which causes them to make a hell of a racket.... well above the limits posted in the amendment.

I don't want to walk a street and hear some trashed Honda or what not with a $50 tin cannon exhaust or nothing, blasting up the road driven by a lower level member of society. These sorts of cars need to be take on off the road.

A shame it spoils it for people with proper cars that are noisy because of their nature like a classic V8, but I suppose most cars with the appropriate exhaust fitted with resonators and quality mufflers can be well with in those limits and still produce a good sound as well as perform nicely.

Im not trying to start a arguement, but you cannot stereotype everyone because of a exhaust.

You never know the full story behind why someone may be driving that car? For example, when I had my Skyline, was quiet as, had a different muffler but was only slight louder than factory, sweet as, however I cracked the two rear rims, so got them repaired, whilst I couldnt drive it for 2 days, I drove a prelude dad had just traded in, 2 HUGE cannons on the back.
Im not a lower member of society just because I drove that car for 2 days..Also, when I bought my Forester, the Japs that had it before me, had gutted the rear muffler of all its baffles, so it was way too loud, but I couldnt afford a new muffler straight away, so I drove it being quite loud, but now it has a silenced muffler on it, so maybe the next loud car you see may be in same situation of not enough money to change what they bought as. Im fully sick of cars hooning at 4am just as much as the next person is, but dont go accusing people of being a thug or dickhead just for having a loud car..

Meh. Rant over.

Exhaust noise,ha ha.

Postby ae82 gt 4 us » Wed Aug 13, 2008 10:48 pm

Came back from hillclimb in Te puke a month ago. Young cop i was about to overtake on open road cause he was only doing 90km,decided he wanted to pull me up. 1st dum arse question from him was have you got a cert plate under bonnet for roll cage? No was my reply dont need one as have a authority card. Boy his eyes light up, argued the point but he was told.... Anyway he still had pimples on his face and i let him off with a warning that he best do some research on what is required. Next issue as he wasnt confident that he could ticket me was, your exhaust sounds louder than standard. Will this guy is clearly to intelligent to be an officer of the law, when i was up his jacksee in 3rd at 6000rpm about to overtake it isnt really hard to work out its noisey. What really concerned me that he was prepared to put a sticker on my car and stop me from driving home to wellington, because of his hearing assessment. As a wof authorised person myself who is to judge whose exhaust is noiser than 95db by ear, this is pretty random that i could be stuck up north because some tosser didnt like being overtaken by a guy in a race car with proper criteria to be on road. This surely would require the law to have common sense .Without measuring equipment at the side of the road, it should come down to where vehicles with noisey exhausts are being operated in eg. built up areas late at night disturbing the peace, this at the end of the day is what caused the whole issue in the first place.

Yes - it's simply a generalization on the matter. Your circumstance was quite different, you didn't own or do those modifications and think they were 'cool'.

I couldn't really be bothered writing out a full description of the type people that actually own these sorts of cars that I was referring to, but basically anyone that's poorly presented and drives a car that's has undesirable modifications (IE excessively loud untuned pointless exhausts) done at their will for a perceived 'upgrade' do fall into my books as low people of society.

At least amendments like this one will hopefully help to reduce the number of people like this around driving cars of this nature. Just makes me cringe every time I hear or see one. :x

There are enough cases now of police stickering vehicles because they feel like it, and the "not louder than stock" clause allows them to do so. The only way I can see to combat this is to get your exhaust certified before you take it on the road. However that may still not stop some over zealous police from stickering it

If you are so worried about being 'stickered' all you have to do is get it tested and cert'd now and then never worry again as then a cop can not abuse his position and make a bad judgement.

I think it's because we've got too many public servants, paid for by out tax $$$$. They've got nothing to do and have to justify their jobs.

2 options,1, keep bringing up new laws for discussion or whatever.
2, restructure the government departments.

Option 2 would be best, fire the whole lot of them and make them reapply for half the number of jobs.

Actually, it's because to 95% of the population a loud car is as annoying as a screaming baby. It is just seen as annoying and totally unnecessary noise pollution. We as car enthusiasts are a tiny minority, and tiny minorities don't get politicians elected.

So the maths go:

Large amounts of voters say "make cars quieter"

Small amounts of voters say "leave our cars alone"

Large amount wins.

Not always... usually it is loud minority scream to media "change this or we'll vote for those guys", quiet majority remain silent.

politics is great, if I wasn't such a dodgy bugger I'd get into it and have my will crushed trying to fix it.

Ok wouldnt it be fair to argue the ear test then, fair enough if your exhaust is louder than 95Db, get a sticker and fix it because apparently 95Db is well loud enough.

I would accept the law if the cop would prove himself properly, if he could measure the noise level correctly and prove his concerns.

That way the bros subarus can get greenied fairly but the rest are safe.

so whats the law on induction noise?? I might have to start constantly driving around with my quads open to the air, that makes it 5x noisier than my exhaust hahahaha
