What to lubricate brake sliders with?

Postby pc » Mon Aug 18, 2008 7:19 pm

I have an AE82 with the standard calipers and my recent set of track pads have worn unevenly. (thinner at one end of the pad than the other)
My calipers appear to be ok on the road and for sprints etc. as the pads I use for that have worn evenly.

My only guess thus far is that my sliders are getting hotter on the track and not sliding well, where as in all other types of driving they are ok?

Anyone got any recommendations for slider grease, or what else may be causing the problem?

Wouldn't the copper coat damage the rubber inner of the slider?

Your pads wearing unevenly could be caused by one of 2 problems

1 - Are both pads of a pair thinner at the same end (e.g. trailing ends of pads)?
OR
2 - Are the pads thin at opposite ends?

1 is caused by pad temperature.

2 is caused by the caliper cocking under braking load due to worn sliders or slider pins.

Pad Temperature.

The wear rate of pads can be affected by temperature, hotter temps = quicker wear.
The pad doesn't get heated evenly by braking. The trailing edge of the pad is hotter than the leading edge because the disk gets hotter as it passes between the pads while braking.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Looks about right, wear is probably the problem. The worn sliders have the following measurements, but I can't find the measurements that the sliders are ment to be new... anyone know?
I found in the Haynes manual yesterday that it says to use a silicone-based grease. but there are no measurements or tolerances.

So if the sliders are buggered? Can I get new ones and rebuild them?
