Turboing N/A Engine

Postby Makaveli » Tue Aug 26, 2008 11:40 pm

I am considering turboing my 1ZZ-FE. I am thinking of getting forged pistons and con rods from USA.

What I was wondering is, could I say buy an evo 5 manifold and turbo and somehow adapt that to the 1ZZ-FE flange, 1ZZ-FE manifold is stainless steel and evo manifold I believe is cast iron. If this is not possible, what would a custom exhaust manifold would be worth? Also what about oil lines and water lines to the turbo? Do I need custom made ones or i can buy generic braided hoses for the purpose? Anything else I should consider? Do I need to make an oil return to the sump (need to modify the sump?).

Pretty much want to hear from anyone who turboed their N/A motor for advice/tips. I dont really wanna spend more than $6k.

Thanks

You can get manifolds made to suit any engine and any turbo. Personally I think you need to do some more homework yourself before asking on here how to do a turbo conversion on your engine. People on here are more than willing to help, but you have to show you willing to help yourself too and do the homework first so you have a clue.

Just chop the existing manifold off at the collector and weld a turbo onto there.

Take oil from oil pressure sensor and drain it into your sump.

easy as.

I assume you are thinking about using an evo manifold because you have one lying around/can get one super cheap? Theoretically you could probably braize the bits together but I seriously doubt it would handle the jandal.

There are plenty of people around that will make a custom manifold that will be more than adequate for under $1000.

You would probably need to drill a hole in the sump and weld either some tube or a fitting on there for an oil drain for the turbo.

IMO spending the coin on having proper lines made up to suit the application is well worth it, not only will they be the correct length, they will also be of a decent quality so you won't have leaks all over the place.

Don't forget you're going to need to do stuff like upgrade your injectors and some form of aftermarket fuel and ignition control, whether it be piggyback or standalone, plus tuning.

Have a search on this forum for 2zz or runx and my username.

Have a look at some of the links, there is plenty of info out there, most of it US based though, but "plenty" of people running 10lb through the stock motors making close to 300WHP, although how usable that is I'm not sure.

The US turbo kits(LHD) don't fit the RHD cars due to the steering column being in the way of the dump pipe, although I believe that turbokits.com one works with RHD, and is cheap enough.

(assuming a front wheel drive, ie, not an MRS)
With the 1zz(and 2zz), the exhaust is at the back of the engine between the engine and the firewall so clearance/space is an issue, but there were guys fitting GT35s in there, so it can't be too constrained.

One of the popular conversion seems to be a rotrex (centrifugal) supercharger, basically a belt driven turbo, and they were again getting close to 300WHP and wheel spinning at 160km/h in an MRS

Good luck, try not to kill yourself. :)

$6k wont cut it, the ECU and tune will take up a large part of that.

1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

If you consider my car as building a NA engine (3sge) into a turbo engine you need to double your budget my cars cost an easy 15k for tune, fabrication, ecu pistons sump plugs etc.

There is a million things you wont think of right now that cost $$ and need doing, one eg of my car was the fabrication of my block to fit the gearbox and transfer case, I had no idea ahead of time it was bigger on the gen3 3sge than a gen2 3sgte, So thats one example of the things you will never make a list for and cost bucks....

Think about it long and hard, 6k will get you turbo, ecu and feeds and lines realistically..

i would allmost say triple your 6k as my 15k figure dont include some parts as id allready aquired them prior to starting my count..

I think you guys are being a bit harsh, it seems that a bolt on kit is what he was referring to.

And assuming he adds an additional $2k for things not included... which from seeing one of these kits I would doubt, it should come in on the $6k budget if he has some mechanically minded mates.

http://www.turbokits.com/corolla_turbo_kits.html $3000US

$3000US is over $4200NZ and you need to factor in shipping and customs costs. Postage form the States is not cheap (as I've found out since being here) They'll ping you for GST and maybe duty (not sure) when it comes into the country.
That starts eating into the budget and you haven't even started working on the car yet.

Havins said that, it is a good kit by the looks of it. A lot of little components included with it, which as said earlier, would add up quickly.

Do the research first, then start forking out the monies.
