4age fault not running????

Postby d1 mule » Wed Aug 13, 2008 10:26 pm

so today i happened to stall my bog stock ae86 , and since then its had a intermittant fault.

it cranks fine, and everything works (lights, wipers etc etc etc) but it just wont run.

after potting around i got a tow start and it ran fine, started prob 15-20 times (testing) without any drama even sat for 2 hours while i was at tech and was fine, not its not running again.

it throws no codes no blown fuses.

ANY IDEAS?? a mechanic mate thought fuel pump relay??

cheers

pull the feed or return line off the fuel rail - will soon tell you if the fuel pump is working.

have you got spark? is it firing at all? try spraying some engine start into the manifold and cranking it over incase it isn't getting fuel...

cambelt hasn't snapped or jumped a tooth? check the timing.

ill do all the fuel/spark stuff tomorro, would have tonight but was too late when i got home, and thought seeing as 4ages have so many comon faults someone may no what it is off the bat.

when i got it going again it ran as per usual so i highly doubt its skipped a tooth.

guess ill get my check on tomoro

battery faulty.

And yes I know you will say that it winds over fine,

but I still say battery.
There will be enough current to wind the starter over,
but not enough voltage to run the ECU.
Have seen it before on 4AGE's.

Try a jump start and see if it helps.

ok, so i the problem is spark, or rather lack there of, just tested now. Its getting fuel as plug was wet.

the thing is, it seems to be temp related eg. if the car has been sitting for hours and is cold it will start fie, however if its been running and warm turned off for 10 mins then it wont run?? any ideas
or maybe its just a coincidence

on a side note when the key is on acc the warning lights should come on, they do but only some times could this be related??

bloody old toyota wiring, man i hate car wiring.

cheers boys

how old are the plugs?
are the plugs pretty black?
how did you test them?

might be worth putting new plugs in just incase, i get mine through toyota for $12.40 a set.

was there no spark at all, or a really weak spark?
has the coil been wet at all?

it could be something as simple as the spark plugs are fouled, i've had it happen quite a few times. once the car is running it goes fine, but its a b!tch to get started.

problem seems to be solved, after replacing the dizzy its not faulted once. however its impossible to time it properly, @ 10-15 degrees base timing it runs like a bag of shit, only runs good at approx 30 advance. its really weird we ended up just seting it by feel which is approx 30-35 advance at idle.

it also has a high idle approx 1400rpm?????????

its only throwing code 11 which is someting to do with the air con switched at the TPS so i doubt its that.

so not perfect but its good to be able to drive it again 8)

Code 11 may means your TPS switch is not working,
and without the TPS switch working you cannot set base timing,
ao all may be related.

could just mean it is out of adjustment, so check before replacing.
