AE111 problem.

Postby bs » Mon Sep 01, 2008 7:37 pm

So my ae111 trueno failed a warrant on a nut and bolt that aren’t standard that join the bottom of the hub to the arms from the superstrut suspension.
I had the driver’s side hub replaced and the wheel bearing a year ago, which side it’s on. It’s completely different to the passenger’s side.
It got a warrant last time fine.

I can either replace it and get it back to standard.
Or get it certed for $400.
Or put my non superstrut stuff in and then get that certed. (Still need suspension and tie rod ends)
The passenger’s side nut threads in to the hub I presume. So would the drivers be able do that to, as it looks like the thread is smaller on the nut and bolt so it can fit threw the thread in the hub.

It also failed on the front exhaust mount needing replacing. Nothing to hard just a bitch to get to

Location?

I'm sure someone will have a proper bolt you can have for FREE.

Your local Toyota dealer will probably be able to supply you a bolt too for not much.

Wellington. Should really put that on my profile thing.

Yeah I emailed mark at Manawatu Toyota for a bolt, haven't herd back yet tho.

Just need to get a spare or new one off some one. Tried the wreckers to, but they never have anything with superstrut.

So am I correct in saying that it should still be the same thread and jsut a smaller bolt threw it?
Will endever to get the passenegrs side out and fit it in the drivers to make sure its the same. Just dont have access to a rattel gun which would be very handy...

the original bolt is meant to screw upward into the hub, the person who replaced it has used a small diameter bolt and a nut to fasten it together,(well it looks that way) lets hope that loose bolt has not chewed away thread on the hub,

No need for a rattle gun on that, looks like a couple of ring spanners will sort it piss easy

If you give me the old one, I can find you one in my pile of mess some where.
Looks like the normal toyota bolt used on many mounting points.
Like the PS bracket bolts, alternator bracket, and suspension bottom mounting points like urs.

So....

Had a good proper look today after work and the threads are striped on the drives side hub. And there was only two bolts in there not three 8O not that vtnz didn't pick up on that or anything...

So would it be possiable to helicoil the nuts in. As two of them are striped. Or get a bigger bolt and re thread them?

This would be your best bet. Who did the work on it? I'd be pretty pissed off if I found that on my car. You'll need to find some correct length bolts, drill out the stuffed threads and tap new ones, although it looks like you really don't have too much thickness in that flange! :?

I am pissed off. Weather the threads were strpied before the hub got put on i don't know.

The bottom part of the "flange" is jsut a hole and threads upwards in to the hub. the one that's in there now in the photo isnt even the correct size so it has a little bit of play :?

I dont have a tap and die set. And have never used one myself either.

How it got a warrent like that 6months ago I don't know.

You have to remember, warrant people are only people, and they can miss things just as easily as anyone.

If the current bolt is substantially undersized, you might get away with just tidying up the damaged thread with a tap. Often people just wind it in a couple of threads and give up, so perhaps borrow the same size tap as the bolt, and try winding it in from the top (opposite to the direction the bolt would go in normally).

But then, if you haven't done that before, I'd recommend finding a TS'r in the area who has, as its' easy to do more damage if you don't know what you're doing! :)

If the whole thread is bung, I'd take it to an engineer to get drilled and tapped, but shop around for a good price, that way they can supply a new bolt as well. :)

I'm in lower hutt in wellington so thats a no go.

I put the standard bolt up from the passengers side up the drivers one and it jsut slid up it with out tightning it. So will most likely have to get it drilled out and taped and a bigger bolt.

Theres an engineer across the road form work. But not to sure about taking the hub off (never done it before myself) And dont have a ball joint seperator.
