Ae101 turbo trueno/levin

Postby true?no » Mon Sep 01, 2008 7:39 pm

Hey guys,

I was thinking about upgrading my Ae101 trueno for a turbo Trueno or levin but was just wanting to get an idea of how popular they are esp in the south island where i am and i can expect to have to pay for a decent 1. PLus any pros/cons about them?

Im thinking its going to be cheaper to get one already built up then do it myself..... true?

Any opinions would be muchly apperciated :D

Heaps cheaper than building one yourself, unless you can do alot of the work yourself. High power + FWD =  . Heaps of fun. Dunno what you mean by popular, there are a few around the traps.

Good to see you have done some homework :P

Buying a turbo Levin/Trueno already made will save you more money and time. So if you just want the end product and not the journey to the end product, you'd be silly not to buy one.

The Levin/Truenos are pretty reliable, there will always be exceptions, but overall you can't really go wrong with either or of them. Superstrut models do cost a bit more to repair (front suspension) if you get problems.

so much info about them on this forum, use search for more info

One thing you will want to keep an eye is using FULL words though, text speak is for use on cellphones only. Use of it on a forum will result in whippings

One on Trademe now:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 099244.htm
However, $10g ono seems excessive. I got my one for under $7g. This one has had some coin spent on it though. One thing that annoys me with it is with all the money spent, they only put a TD04 turbo on it. It's begging to get a TD05H put on it.

Also a AE111 turbo on Trademe:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 942883.htm
At $7.5g seems good. Smallish turbo again and not massive power for a 4AGTE (probably due to low boost level), but would be a poo load of fun. It's got a cage in it though, so might not be your cup of tea.

There are both in the North sland, but it can be worth it to travel to buy a car. My mate and I drove from Auckland to Masterton and back in one day to buy a BZ Touring Wagon. Ended up saving a poo load of money compared to buying locally.

If you're interested, there's a AE92 Turbo in Chch:

Looks pretty tidy.

I have a 218kw atw ae101 monster sitting in my garage, hasnt run in couple of months, just needs some new spark plugs and some fresh fuel to turn it over.
i'm intending on selling it as soon as i can be bothered starting it and getting it a wof, and will be going stupidly cheap when i do. fair price is probly 7-8k for the specs mine has but i'll probly throw it away for ~5k when i eventually get round to sorting it out, just coz i've got other priorites now.
viewtopic.php?t=54014

things to look for:
-4agze bottom end, or 4agze pistons, very useful if you want much more than 140kw atw
-gearboxes in relation to power output, c series shift much nicer and has close ratios but won't last too long at decent power outputs. E series are stupidly strong but tend to eat synchros, also use a thicker driveshaft i think too, but ratios are very long.
-does it have LSD? slippy diffs are very rare for E series boxes but very useful if you intend on going to the track.
-what ECU does it run and who tuned it? can use 4agze ECU's but an aftermarket give more flexibility for tuning.
-size of the turbo? this is key in getting good power output from a 4agte, as the small engine needs a good sized turbo to get the best from it, but needs to be sized right to avoid lag.

some things to consider when looking, there are a lot of really rough ones around, so its better to wait for a tidy example to rush into a cheap shitter as you'll end up spending a lot of money to fix it.

Yeh yeh, the thing with it being up north is that it makes it harder to try before you buy sorta thing, Will either take you a weekend or or more to get there and back by car, or a couple of hundy to fly there and back... But if you wanted to take some pics of it and send them my way we could have something in the pipeline??

Will take me a few months to get the coin and sell my beast atm lol

it works out cheaper to get it running as you dont need to do the fuel system and ECU since the gze ecu will run most mild setups quite happily.
unfortunately most people lose interest once they get it going and dont carry through with the project.

Or also likely, that unless you're going to be racing it all the time, 150-160kw is plenty for a road car.
