However, I spent way too much on the car, and going to the rally in the last month, so no camera for me soon.

I'd really suggest a camera like mine, the 10x optical zoom is a must (though I still think I need another lense to increase my zoom) and it's really easy to use with some more advanced features if you really wanna be geeky with it. Didn't kill the bank either at only $229. You'd be looking for a while to find a camera with the same specs for that price.

*edit* Please note I'm not an uber geek when it comes to cameras though I'm slowly learning how people can be :)

Your camera is a what?

Reason I like the Canon is that my existing little Canon has proved incredibly tough (I've dropped it about ten times), and the S5IS seems to have a good lense, and fast burst shot function (crucial for motorsport stuff).

Fuji Finepix S5700 (haven't seen this yet myself but www.youtube.com/watch?v=QElrY3ybGB0) also pricespy has www.pricespy.co.nz/pno_10322.html and camera link on fuji website http://www.fujifilm.co.nz/products/item ... =1&pid=334. It probably won't enjoy being dropped but comes with neck carry thing so I haven't had any troubles this far. (aside from getting caught on my knobs on my chest of draws and dropping myself to the ground (camera landed on me so was fine). It does burst shot which I agree is crucial though it isn't as quick as I'd like but have a look here http://picasaweb.google.com/DarkWolf9008/WRCNZ
at what it can do. They are all scaled down versions obviously and if you want a better view let me know and I'll upload some full scale versions.

*edit* just realised pricespy had it for $338 I got mine $229 after some haggling from $259 at DSE in Levin.

The S5IS is one badass camera... I had the S3IS and was always suprised by its picture quality and also the sound quality on the video mode (Didn't distort when Willie Whites Nitro Car flew passed  ) Large 800x600 video too.

But there are some cheap SLR's out there now.. I think I saw the Nikon D40X for around $660?....... x10 better than any snapshot machine (but you do loose the video mode)

SLR is the way to go, I don't regret getting mine.

Ah, yep, the Finepix. Yeah, that was on the list of camera's I looked at about a year or more ago, but at that time, the Canon totally killed the Fuji of the same specs for sports photo's. Things may have changed since then.

Yah, camera's are getting crazy good for the price. Every camera I've bought has cost around $500, and they've improved by a factor of ten every time.

I've used video mode I think once ever, so losing video is no major.
