Fixed back bucket seat into SW20

Postby GDII » Wed Sep 17, 2008 7:41 pm

I am looking for a fixed back bucket seat for my SW20 MR2. Currently the standard seat sits too high in the car and I hit my helmet on the glass targa top.
If I have the cover on the glass I can't sit in the car.

I'm 180cm tall (not that tall really) but have a taller body so when I sit in most cars my head is very close to the roof.

I'm after a tall backed race seat with side mounts so I can mount it low in the car.
What have 'tall' people used in their cars? I prefer Sparco style seats over others.

I run Bride Zeta III FIA seats in mine, on Bride rails. Im 175cm-ish and when sitting i have around 50-70mm of space above my head. This is also in a hardtop SW20, i imagine targa has less space.

Id offer for you to try sitting in mine, but unfortunately im at the other end of the country :(

There is just the glass which has the same roof line as a hardtop. The glass is 2-3mm thick so it wouldn't much different.

I think if I get a fiberglass seat and mount it so the base is on the carpet i should just have enough room for my helmet.

I also can't sit in normal race seats because my shoulders sit above the wings and my head way over the top of the head rest.

The best seat for me could be the SPARCO EVO 2 PLUS, But thats over $1000. So way out of my price range.

I think any seat will be fine, as long as you get custom rails. Ill get some pics of mine tomorrow, but the rails actually hold the seat quite high. Theres approx 40mm or something below the seat.

I'll be solid mounting it in one position so I can get it as low as I can.
If anyone else wants to use the car i can drop in my standard seat.

I can get a drop of 80-100mm max if I do that.
Now i just need to find a seat thats decent. Willing to spend up to $500 for a new one.

I'm 187 cm and when I went drag racing in my old SW20 I just had to remove the drivers T top shade and I had plenty of room :?

I have to drive around all the time with the shades off or I keep hitting my head. I can lean the seat back but then I don't have enough control over the car.

It's not my over all height thats the problem. It's my body length when I'm sitting down.

I decided to go with a Bride style seat as they are wider than the Sparco style.

Yeah I sit upright when I drive as well which is why I found it a little strange. Thankfully my new cars seating position is either bolt upright, or flat on my back

if you get any bucket seat and make your own bracket (or get one made) that will mount the bucket seat straight to the chassis mounting points then you should have plenty of room.

but it will be fixed no one else will be able to drive your car. and you will probably need a racing harness (but thats part of the fun) and you will need a cert for the WOF

i have that set up in my AE70 and ur prety much sitting on the florr

Bride make rails in different heights, a set of superlows should get your seat slammed to the ground.

Not for *every* seat though =] But yes there's options...

When I raced my car in the weekend I put the targa covers back in so I was squashed in the car pretty tight. Wasn't so comfortable but when I was racing I just forgot about it and concentrated on driving. But I would like to drop my seat.

I have bought a 'bride' style seat, no idea of what brand, just looks like one.
Still waiting for delivery. Then will see how it fits.

You don't need cert if you change the seat but you do if you change the mounting points on the car body.

I don't see why I would need a harness if I change my seat to another one that looks different.

If someone else wants to drive my car (I don't let anyone else drive my cars anyway) I can just bolt in the original seat. Which I will do when I'm not racing. Unless you can't do that?
