link ignition advance ??

Postby MR2SIK » Fri Sep 19, 2008 1:56 pm

probably a stupid question, but anyway.

do Linkplus's advance ignition based on knock readings etc like some factory ecu's do? or is it set at whatever it was when it was tuned?

Hey, at least it sounds like a 3s.

Pretty sure the typical Links have no knock retard, it just goes off what is set into the map.

Yes the linkplus do do knock retard.

You need to calibrate the knock reading to tell it what it knock and what is noise.

when you turn the ecu on it will run the pre-programmed ingition advance,
and when it crossed the knock threshold you have set,
it will drop some advance out of that zone.

The trap is,

It will not re-advance that zone until you turn the car off.

If you set the knock point too low and it senses noise as knock,
and you drive it for a while, you will end up with no power and
a very retarded map.
We found that out that the more laps we drove in a row the slower that car got, slower and slower lap times, and losing more and more power,
but cycle the key and it then goes like a rocket.

The solution we found was to turn the knock function off,
and just get a decent tune.

so knock sensors on link is waste of time?
just run good band o2 sensor to keep check on the engine?
would u run one for each cylinder?

^ same as what i did. unless thresholds are set high, i can only see it being a pain in the as s. far as i know it only goes by noise level. so theres no frequency filtering etc.. on it at all. pretty low tech.

listen for knock thru a detset, detcans or similar device.

Get a Knock Link, run the display all the time in the car - they only cost $150ish+gst. and spend time (and money) getting it tuned REALLY well

Cheers guys, got no issue with the current tune, all set for nelsons high octane 95  . Just thought with the upcoming drags that I may be able to shave a few tenths off my times by using the 104 or (107?) unleaded that I used back with the stock ecu.

thats about it really, in theory if u have your car tuned properly u shouldnt need knock sensors. nothing will change. so aslong as you run the car with the fuel it was tuned for your not gunna have a problem. same with air/fuel gauges etc. nothings gunna change unless something goes seriously wrong (drop a coil or drop an injector) by which time if u havnt felt the lack of power u will have already caused too much damage for it too matter.
