I dropped my rods and other stuff off at the engine reconditioners and i asked them to push my arp rodbolts in. They saythey have to resize the bigends because new bolts are going in. Are they just taking me for a ride and throwing extra charges on here or does this really need to be done?

I always resize rods if I fit arp rod bolts to rods as the cap locates on the rod bolt and its the only way to make the tunnel round and true, It is also recomended in the instructions that come with ARP rod bolts/main studs.
So yeah your not being taken for a ride and it should defenently be done.

yup mine had to be resized also, apparently when pressing them in it distorts.

are you geting your stuff done a north shore engine reconditioners by any chance?

what exactly is the process for doing this?
Does it effect the bearings?

i got my bottom end done at HAL and my head at NSER.

my mate works there, was having drinks and scoped it all out. haha this a 4agte!

they machine or hone the big end of the conrod back to its original size or to suit the new bearings,
it doesnt effect the bearings if its resized, but can if not,

fitting new studs can distort the shape, making it not perfectly round, this can cause problems with bearings picking up,

Oh so you saw all my gear there. Yeah the bottom end is goin to set me back quite abit in pocket.

Personally I'd classify aftermarket rodbolts as another un nessecary aftermarket part.

But you didn't want to know that.

Do stock ones ever fail?

The bolt doesnt actually fail, but it causes more stretch therefore more likely to run a bearing.

my engnie builder told me the same thing about my SR20 i just had built
ended up going for forged rods cos the cost of getting ARP bolts and having them fitted wasnt that much less
and from what we can tell the motor before it that exploded was caused by something in the rod bolt failing, either it broke or the nut came off its hard to tell after everything hit the crank a few times. so it can happen

depends what you mean by fail,

They stretch and when you do them back up to the correct torque,
they come loose in use.

I have bought about 5 damaged engines now that has tossed rods within a few months of getting bearings replaced,
and pulled them down to find other conrod bolts loose,
and all dont by different people too.

But i dont see a problem with new genuine bolts,
which I fitted to my 1600 turbo 20V that i built.
